zinc chromate
Did anyone ever use zinc chromate as a primer on trim tabs or running gear? I was told by a mechanic in my boatyard it works and it works very well on stainless trim tabs I would love to hear your thougts on this subject

Re: zinc chromate
I painted with zinc chromate and spray zinc rich primer for crane painting between lifts in the field no mask.. It works but asperating the spray has lost me my sense of smell. use a good mask. I have used a brush on primer and finish coat from a prop shop in NH ain't cheap but it worked good last year Marlin by Velox. might be full of zinc? I will look at the boat yard today. Jay

Re: zinc chromate
I just relaunched my boat last week. The only thing I used on any of the metal running gear (including props, struts, shafts, metal strainers, rudders and trim tabs) was a zinc chromate spray paint (Barnical Barrier by Pettit). My trim tabs are stainless, so we'll see what happens.
In the past regular bottom paints did not last and did very little antifouling on my running gear. I will know soon how well it works.
I have used Barnical Barrier on props before. It will wear off of the blades, especially the thrust side of the blades, but it holds up pretty well on on the hub of the prop, where I would always grow the best barnicals.
