2013 Projects

I wasn't allowed to talk about boating at home until February 1st per orders of the co-captain. She says I drive her mad. Who knew?! With the blizzard firmly in our sights here in Boston, I can't help but to plan her Spring commissioning on April 2. Last year Legacy was painted and we did a thorough review of her systems and mechanical needs. This year we're updating a lot of the interior: 3 new batteries, new helm seat, new salon table, new mattress on bed, new refrigerator and if the pocketbook allows, re-upholster all the salon cushions. Anyone else taking on interesting projects? We're planning a two week journey this August leaving Boston and heading to Falmouth, MA; Martha's Vineyard; Block Island; Mystic, CT; and then to Guilford, CT to our little cottage on Leete's Island. Then back to Boston. See you on the water. Spring is just around the corner.

Sounds like winter is going to be damaging to your wallet! I just plan on a high water alarm in the bilge and a oil filter relocation kit.

Rick - With all that pent up boating energy over the past few months you're out of the gate for your interior makeover. Don't throw the bit! With the great Awlgrip job the interior deserves the same treatment .. a new bed will be nice. :wink:

No projects on PITOU this season ... now that I've got her where I want her ... she's for sale. Looking for that single screw 31 TE.

Legacy, sounds like you should have a full plate between now and April! I'm in the process of having all my bolsters in the cockpit replaced by Bristol cushions and a few things here and there.

Look forward to some pictures once everything is done!

I dont see how you folks live up there with all that snow, should move to sunny Florida :)

1. Replace the batteries
2. Newport Edition style transom bench
3. Squid fishing lights below waterline
4. Replace through platform screws for ladder to stop the rust bleed
5. Replace rubber caps on rod holders
6. Dock whips (Seriously considering moor-king. OTOH, The gentleman who built the dock recommended a mooring with heavy duty rubber bands fixed to the outside of the boat.)
7. Replace the planks that Sandy removed and get rid of the piling that washed onto the beach. Anybody need a 30' long x 20" diameter piling?

Anybody want to lift out 3 8D's from my engine compartment and pop in 3 replacements? I'll wait until the ice is off the docks.

Rick sounds like you have a lot on the plate for start of Spring. Would stress my pocket book for sure. It should be great with your new paint and all the interor work completed. The boat looks really great in the photos. I assume the new Imron had been done. Will this blue color hold up better and longer than the facory blue which requires lots of polish and attenton? Just came across your 'Paint" comments. That answered my questons on the quality of the paint. Looks great in the close up picture. I incorrectly assumed it was AwiGiip.

Nibbles last winter got a Gen. set and Webasto Diesel heat. That hit me really hard for just having purchased the boat in the previous summer season. However, both made last summer wonderful when out in the Puget Sound early and late and those colder nights and allowed for some winter use at the dock as well.

I am going through de-winterization early in March. The only costly item that is likely on the prep. is new gel batteries. Mine have been in the boat since new in 2006. Although it has an 3500 Zantrax inverter system with separate 6 vote Golf Batteries they all remain taxed. The boat is shy on onboard ref. so I use a Dometic 6/12 volt cooler and well as a second for a freezer. I get through the night but then the gen. set has to be run a couple hours to get things back up unless it is a longer cruise day.

Do have one more concern. The down galley series is pretty short on sleeping space. The front berth is great for a two. However, the only other sleeping is the settee which is good for one and impossible for two. Have been wondering if there is anyway to add another siingle sleeping area. Maybe something that provides a platform at the window level and above the settee.
Of course it would have to come down during the day and then where would one store it. If you could come up with something that is hinged and then lays back against the settee upper seat backing it might work. The extra cushions could then be stored in the front berth during the day. That would mean someone is sleeping above the person on the settee, but that is no different than bunks.
If anyone has a down galley and thoughts on out to do this I would like to hear from them. Nibbles is the 35te Sportfiser flybridge model down galley.

Hi Howard,

Since I keep bringing back older posts I thought this one could use a few comments as well! Plus we 35'ers have to look out for each other. :)

You say your settee is "impossible for two". Does it slide out? Mine does. If yours does not, there's a possible answer. If it does, and it's just too small, it would probably be easier to extend the width of the settee than to make a bunk overhead. Maybe make it a triple part slider, rather than a two part. The advantage would be that stowage of the structure could be accomplished easier, and setup/take down as well.

If you do go for a "bunk" style I can tell you that the lower bunk in the second stateroom is TIGHT on "headroom". I can sleep in there but reading? Forget it. I mention this because if I were to build a bunk over the settee and keep it as tight as the factory cabin option I might be able to swing it up on a piano hinge and just use it as the backing of the upper settee cushion during the day. In other words - hinge it right at the top of the existing settee back.

Howard, if you search my posts you will find a picture of an additional bunk I made in the bow of my 28. Came out great and looks factory. Great for small crew and ok for adults. If u can't find it send me an email and I'll email u.
