Looking to buy Albin 28

Post by Third Day »

I joined this forum because I will buy an Albin 28. One is in excellent condition - 1995 with Cummins 240 turbo @ 600 hrs. Always shed kept. Is the Cummins enough power, what is the fuel burn like? Is the Cummins reliable?
Am also looking at similar boat 1993 but new Peninsular 315. I'm a little bit concerned with this engine though.

I would surely appreciate any comments/suggestions.

I have the 250 HP Cummins and have found it adequate but would not mind having a bit more horsepower. The Cummins 6BTA is a fantastic engine for these boats. It is reliable, economical on fuel and easy to maintain. Since the same engine is sold in Dodge trucks you can purchase maintenance items at auto parts stores for much less than other marine diesels. The link below is for a 95 model in Norfolk with the 300 HP Cummins for an asking price of 42K. It might be worth a look.

Hi Julie, and welcome aboard.

We have a '95 with a 250 Cummins. Bought it last year down in your neck of the woods - home port was Williamsburg, yard in Deltaville. We're very happy with the boat. Fuel burn last summer was a little under 4 gph.

You will not see drastic differences in the fuel burn between the different diesel powerplants in the 28TE. What WILL make a difference is how you prop the boat and how you run the boat.

Here's last year's numbers on my Yanmar 28TE:

454 gallons burned
94 engine hours
4.83 gallon/hour average
890 nautical miles traveled
1.96 nautical mile/gallon average

I did a bit more on plane running last year than normal as we ran to quite a few ports not very close to home, so not a lot of lazy day hull speed time. In 2011 my average gallons per hour was down at 4.3.

What you will find different between the different power choices is noise, smoke, cost of maintenance, ease of maintenance, etc, etc.. They all have pluses and minuses..

No I do not know this boat. I did a search trying to find the one you were looking at and found this one with the 315 HP Cummins. For the price it looks reasonable and gives you something to compare to the ones you have found. Not sure what your price range is but this one from Pitou would be hard to beat: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5943
