New project: Electra Scan

Now that I have replaced all my paneling in the forepeak and stopped the window leaks, it's time for the next project, an Electra scan. They are legal on most of the west coast, but I'll retain the holding tank and have the option of using it with the treated sewage, or dumping it through the through hull.

I'm moving the Raritan PHII to the forward head, a new Raritan Sea Era in the aft, and re-plumbing the aft head sanitary line with PVC. It was really easy and much cheaper than that expensive and hard to fit hose. It will have a nice straight run instead of that old hose at the bottom of the bilge.

And after 30 years, that old hose was definitely ready to be replaced.

Electra Scan in and working. The only question is, why didn't I put one of these things in years ago? Of course putting it in was a three week struggle.

If anyone has any negative information I'd love to hear it, but all seems well so far.

Hard to imagine why it's so hard to find anyone who has one, and what a great answer it is to all of the holding tank issues.

My boat had an Electra San (predecessor to the Electra Scan) when I purchased her. I removed it and installed a traditional holding tank system.

Why? Practically my entire boating area is a "no discharge" zone - and that includes treated waste. Even if I were to use it in sealed mode (no overboard discharging) it only had a 3 gallon tank. It just didn't suit my cruising grounds or needs.

When we bought our boat 10/2010 it had an Electra Scan already installed.

Over the winter it seemed to stop working and, to make a long story shorter, I was getting frustrated that I couldn't find a distributor/knowledgeable support person who would come and check thing out (even for a fee).

I contracted Raritan voicing my displeasure of how they were running their support.

My email got to the President of the company who got me in contact with a VP of Engineering including his home phone number to call on a Sunday. Talk about support.

We were able to find what the issue was (won't say it was my fault) and got some additional info and support on the unit.

My setup has Y valves, and I'm replacing them this winter with Raritan Y valves, which enable me to use the Electra Scan or to send to the holding tank (30 gal one that came with the boat, for those time you can't discharge). Our marina doesn't charge for pump outs. I have read that the discharge from the unit is cleaner than most water we boat in.

My experience with the Electra Scan is that I wouldn't have a boat without one (no chance of selling this one anyway) and that Raritan is a top notch organization to deal with. I am also planning on installing their rudder angle indicators as well.

I have mine hooked up that way,either the holding tank or overboard, see photo. Very little of my area has no discharge zones, so I'm good either way.

The Elertro Scan cost the same as calling the guy 35 times, they charge $30. The pump out dock is free, but very hard to use, especially with a single screw and often not working. Then there's going out 3 miles.

And I agree about their support. Hard to believe I know of no one who has an Electro Scan, or anyone who knows anything about them. They have been making them for over 30 years
