Hoses & stuff

Post by Veebyes2 »

Last Sep my water heater packed up. The inside tank sprung a leak & that was the end of it. I closed the water supply from the engine, blocked the freshwater side of it & put it on the 'deal with it when the boat comes out of the water' list.

So, this week on & off I have been on my knees & even more uncomfortable positions, which get worse with age, removing the old heater & getting ready to install a new one.

Of course it is not like getting parts for a car where you just get the part & change it out. NOOOOOOO!

The new heater is different. It is not a simple matter of disconecting hoses & reconnecting. Surgery must be performed which involves new hoses from the engine & who knows what yet for hooking up the fresh water supply & service.

I am going to have to move the holding tank about 6" which means new hoses for that.

On removing the old engine coolant supply & return hoses I noticed that in a couple of places the hose was very weak. The weakness was caused by chafe from engine vibration & stress in tight hose turns along with age, 7 seasons.

Check your hoses thoroughly. Get a mirror to see those difficult spots.

I ran into the same problem and my boat is just coming into it's 5th season. On winterizing in November, mechanic noticed hoses chaffed and cracked on the lines from the engine to the water heater. Visa card and a couple of hours later they are new.

It seems vibration (and probably heat) can do quite a number on them.

Q: What were the 2 Mexican FireFighting Brother's names?
A: Hose A and Hose B.
groan...
....
i just got a new water heater for my 28 te. not yet installed ...sheesh! it has to be just about the most inaccessible assembly in the whole boat. looks like 10 man hours at least.
...
i had to decide between bead/soda blasting the bottom and replacing the heater.

I may be headed down the same path. I am begining to think the engine coolant is not circulating through the water heater and the cabin heater due to the water heater's heat exhanger being clogged. We will see.

Well,

My boat mechancic fixed the issue with my water heater and cabin heater. It wound up being that the cabin heater was clogged up with some black sluge. Where that came from who knows. Some of it was in the water heater also. Bacially he blew them out with a fresh water hose. Now my engene coolant is flowing freely through them both and I have hot water and a cabin heater again!

how does your hot water taste?

...i guess nobody ever really drinks the water stored on their boats. i would guess its just about 100 percent for showers and dishes and maybe cleaning fish...
although i guess i have used it for coffee a time or two.
