HOLDING TANK VOLUMES

Post by halfmoon »

Specs on various 28s give holding tank volumes from 6 to 20 gallons. Are these volumes associated with year of manufacture or were larger volumes a factory option. If information on a particular boat is not available, can one eyeball the tank in order to ascertain its volume.

I've noticed that, too. I'd love to get the particulars where a 20 gal. tank is located.

I don't know about factory specs, but you can always measure and calculate to get a rough idea. (231 cu. in./gal.) Of course this doesn't take into account the wall thickness or the elevation of the incoming hose.

I'm not sure about the 20 gallon size, but the 6 gallon capacity is almost certainly the Vacuflush system. It uses very little water to flush so performs like a larger conventional holding tank. Quest has this system and it seems adequate for my use. My use however is probably very light. Usually just me on the boat and dock at marinas when cruising.

the technical bulletin for the 28 does say 20 gallon holding tank. I know my is not that size. Probably the 6 gallon. I've seen other posts with 10 gallon as well. It's a mystery.

On our boat, it's in the bilge under the helm seat. It's way in there almost to the starboard side of the hull. Have fun!

If you open the center deck hatch in the pilothouse and look to starboard directly under the footwell should be the water heater. Directly aft of the water heater should be the plastic holding tank. They are both right up against the hull side.
