Battery location

Where are you batteries located on your 36-DC? I'm re-doing my ER and need any ideas you have.

On y 40...the "inverter bank" (4 6v GCs) are located in line on the port side of the ER. The house and engine starting batteries (2 grp 31 and 1 8D) are located on the starboard side just forward of the genset or under the lower helm area.

The House bank, 6 6 V golf carts, are in a custom made battery box located about 3' forward of the engine. The starter battery and inverter/charger are on the starboard side at the very front of the engine room
I just saw your post on the original shower sump. My battery box is direct above that tank. (which makes the tank inaccessible) but as I find the tank useless like you did it doesn't matter.

My 36 has a gen just fwd of the main eng. my 4 6v in two blue-sea boxes are just forward of the gen. Inverver is on the front wall of the ER just below the helm. Starting 8D is under the floor of the aft hanging locker (nice fit, and close to the starter. Has it's own disconnect sw).

The following comprises the ship's batteries aboard Sea Crawler.

House Bank:
The house bank is located under the floor of the aft stateroom hanging locker. It currently comprises of four (4) East Penn Mfg, Inc. Pow-R-Surge 6V Deep Cycle marine batteries Model No. PS125, 1200 Series, 235AH, that are located in the sub-compartment under the floor of the port side hanging locker in the aft stateroom. The 4 batteries are linked into 2 banks with matched length #1 AWG battery cables, balancing the banks between the house bank battery switch and Blue Sea Systems VSM 500A DC shunt.
A Blue Sea Systems p/n 1591 Single Terminal MRBF® Fuse Block is fitted to each of the 2 battery bank’s Positive battery terminal to satisfy ABYC 7” circuit protection rule. Blue Sea Systems p/n 5189 MRBF® 250A Terminal Fuses (Pink) are used in each of the Terminal Fuse Bocks.
The compartment can probably accomodate 6 batteries if need be.
A Xantrex (Statpower) Prosine 1800 Watt True Sine Wave Inverter is located on the engine aft bulkhead adjacent the engine lift muffler. A Blue Sea Systems p/n 5503 ANL Fuse Block for 35-750A loads fitted with p/n 5133 ANL-300 Amp fuse is located in the sub-compartment below the aft cabin hanging locker adjacent the house batteries. Essex Royal 4/0 Arc Welding Cable is used between the Inverter, ANL fuse block and the House Battery Switch and Shunt.
The House Battery Bank services the DC Panels via the Lower Helm Battery Selector Switch in the #2 position.

Starting Battery:
One (1) Mercury Model No. D/P 8M0085156812V Combo Deep Cycle/Starting battery (Group 31 size), CCA Rating 700, CA Rating 875 is located under the salon floor on the port side, adjacent the engine starter. The 2.4KW Lucas M50 starter was replaced with a new ISKRA high torque gear reduction P/N IS1158 (AZF4146) starter that is rated 4.3KW.

Bow Battery:
One (1) East Penn Mfg, Inc. Pow-R-Surge 12V starting battery (Group 24 size), Model No. 24M7, 3600 Series, CCA Rating 24M-875, CA Rating 1000 is located under the lower cushion in the vee-berth centre compartment.
The battery supplies power to the Volvo Bow Thruster motor.
The Volvo Bow Thruster supplied fuse installed in the ANL fuse block is rated at 300 Amps. The Volvo supplied fuse block and ANL type fuse are substituted by Blue Sea Systems p/n 2151 Double Stud MRBF® Fuse Block and MRBF® Terminal Fuses attached to the battery Positive post.
Blue Sea Systems p/n 5189 MRBF® 250 Amp (Pink) Terminal Fuse is used for the Bow Thruster; p/n 5181 MRBF® 80 Amp (Lime) Terminal Fuse is used for Battery Charging.

Stern Battery:
One (1) East Penn Mfg, Inc. Pow-R-Surge 12V Combo Deep Cycle/Starting battery (Group 31 size), Model No. DC31DT, Series 3600, CCA Rating 31DC-225, CA Rating 810 is located under the salon floor on the starboard side adjacent the transmission and is serviced from the aft stateroom access door.
The Stern Battery services the DC Panels and Windlass (via the Lower Helm Switch in the #1 position); the Generator Starter and the Stern Thruster are directly wired.
Also directly connected to this battery is the vessel’s main bilge pump and electric fuel pump. The electric fuel pump is used for priming the engine fuel filters during Racor filter servicing.

I like your set-up. Do you have any ventilation in the hanging locker? Do you have a schematic you could post up?

I did consider ventilating the house battery compartment by drilling holes at the top of the sub compartment and covering them with a grill and possibly a muffin fan for additional flow.
To date, I have not done so because the battery cable pass-thru at the bottom of the compartment and the finger hole in the drop-in panel covering the subcompartment provides input/egress.
FYI, I have monitored the temperature of the house bank (the sensor is positioned on top the bank) and found it to remain at ambient even under 60A charge.

@ meridian: As for a schematic, I do have a hand drawn version but it is on the boat, a 2 hr drive away. It is one of my projects to complete next spring.
Are you looking for something in particular?
