I can't guess on that one. I'm sure someone will jump in here, but Welcome to AOG.

Re: 28 te jar in engin comp.
How about a little more information: what engines, year, exactly where is it, and a picture or two is always helpful.
It may be part of the CCV system, where oily exhaust from the crankcase are returned to the air intake for recombustion. This may be the "puke bottle" to catch excess oil sludge that condenses from the oil vapor.
Give us some more information and someone will know, or join boatdiesel.com and surely someone there can explain it much better that I can.

The residue inside is orange. It is on the inside of the port stringer next to gearbox. Can get pic later this week.

If your coolant is orange, then the jar (bottle) might be an overflow container for the coolant expansion tank... Don't know if your setup has an expansion tank...
Hope this helps,

Wow, I am quite suprised to find that this has yet to be resolved. First order of business would be to consider getting another mechanic if this issue is something that has him "stumped" as you noted in your initial post.
We did ask for pictures, do you not have any? or do you have them but are unable to post them?
Do you actually see the hose making a connection at the shaft or does it just dissappear down there somewhere?
A PSS seal could have a single vent hose but that would not explain the orange fluid in the bottle. Orange fluid could be the engine coolant in an overflow bottle but that should have 2 small hoses, one from the rad cap, the other open ended, usually laying down in the bilge and perhaps near the shaft where you describe it. One of the 2 hoses could easily be missing...
I'm stumped that this could all really stump a mechanic...

Re: 28 te jar in engin comp.
I've seen remote oil resevoirs that could be described as "a plastic bottle with a hose running to the gearbox", but now the hose runs to the prop shaft? Agreed, a photo would be helpful. "Orange liquid" could describe gear lube.
Also, sometimes there is just no substitute for getting in there and getting dirty to find exactly where the hose goes (not just "under the engine"), but I would assume that is what your mechanic did... ...and it stumped him too?
