Best Remote Oil Filter Orientation

We all know that a side mounted oil filter leaks when it is removed for servicing.
I'm in the process of installing an oil filter kit to relocate the filter to a remote location for easier and cleaner servicing.
What in your experience is the best way to position the filter - screwed from the top, bottom or side?

Vertical. Not too high above the sump to limit drainage when you shut down. Be sure you have the flow through the remote filter head in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply. When you say "Vertical" is that with the filter screwed in from the bottom (hanging down)? I'm wondering how much oil would seep out around the filter once it is loosened.

After consideration from previous input, this is the location I have chosen to relocate my engine oil filter to facilitate filter changes.

Looking good, new tranny cooler too?

Following are my completed installations wrt remote engine oil filter adapter and new oil and tranny coolers installations.

The 1st photo shows the new tranny cooler and 1/2" hydraulic lines installed along with a temp sensor (blue wire) in the outflow line.

The 2nd photo shows the hose routing between the new engine oil cooler and the remote oil filter adapter assembly mounted to a bracket that is fastened to the transmission attach points.

Perfect....as mentioned, just hold a large freezer bag or similar around the filter while unscrewing and just let the filter drop into bag. Quick zip and done.

Sea Crawler, I see your Racor is in the same place as mine. Have you given any consideration to relocating it?

@ meridian: I had not considered relocating the RACOR to date but am interested in alternative options to free up the area and facilitate servicing.

I say free up the area because one of the projects I would like to complete next year is to build a multi-port manifold setup for oil/tranny/antifreeze fluids drainage using an electric pump.

Hi Ragman,
My tranny cooler (which is identical to the engine oil cooler for the Lehman engine) was purchased by the PO from BOMAC marine. It was included as a spare when I purchased the boat in 2011.

FYI, Bomac Marine Power has been family owned by Greg and Maureen Lilienthal for over 20 years. I found them very helpful in discussing and solving my tranny overheat problem, and providing me with replacement/spare parts.

I would like to relocate all my filters to a different location; Racor, (2) on-engine fuel filters, oil filter, and fuel filter for my gen set as none of them are easily accessible where they are now. The starboard side of the DC-36 engine has no room to work. I wish I could relocate the water pump.

Since I have room to maneuver in front of my engine, I’m thinking of mounting them on a board across the front of the engine.

My genset, Lehman, and trans all have drain hoses that are capped and can be easily hooked up to a portable electric pump that I store out of the way when not needed,
