All good stuff, thanks for the thorough post. If you don't want to run as far as Block, TOY-RIFIC is in Port of Egypt, Southold until the 1st week in Sept. You can come into there, Greenport or Shelter Isl. And if you are still feeling the FUD we can setup a fuel transfer station right into T-R, she's under a half tank right about now...

Doug, didn't you make a comment once about going down to Jersey to save a couple of scheckles on diesel. In the words of a famous American, "How is that change working for you". Good luck considering you just wanted an excuse to add some wiring in the salon.

Wow, what a saga this all turned out to be! We are so glad that you will now begin making up for the loss of time. You have plenty of boating season left though to make up for the "down" time. We're heading for 3 Mile Harbor this weekend - hope to leave on Friday and make it 3 days. Enjoy wherever you go - you deserve it.

Thanks everyone! Not exactly the boating season I was planing on, but what can you do? I did pick up a tremendous amount of new knowledge of how the 35 is put together and, while NO expert, I'm a lot more knowledgeable about modern diesel engines.

Still look to be on schedule for the weekend. Fingers crossed!

... great update post.

I'm glad for you that with all the possibilities, though certainly expensive, having a faulty injector was almost as painless a fix as it could get, less all the dismantling hassles. Staying positive is something we can all take from this.

They sure do pack stuff in and you're right about boat builders being evil    though they are just loading these boats up with all of the consumer demands.

Best to a good boating weekend.

Hi Doug,

Great news. Glad to hear Sonny IV is almost up and running. I still can't believe all you had to do to get to the engine. Again, great news. I am sure you are relieved. Thanks for also sharing the pictures. Looks like a great boat!

If you have any questions - fire away!
Question: You are gonna change the other 5 injectors, right? Don't cheap out now!
Better yet - if it was a fuel thing, you better change the other 11 !!

So Doug, do you believe that gold injector was ruined by bad fuel? How does only one injector go bad? Not that I would wish any more on you! What an ordeal.

Doug:

You may want to consider having the defective injector rebuilt so that you have a spare…

Good luck

Good point in most cases, and I did think of that. But...

It has to go back to Volvo as a "core". Otherwise they charge even more!

And honestly, based on my experience, I don't think you can replace one without popping the hatch over the engine, so having a spare hanging around wouldn't do much for you unless you were traveling somewhere far from a Volvo dealer.

Bringing another post back to life...

As some of you know my beloved Sonny IV is still "sick". After all of the above the repair lasted for all of 10 (engine) hours. Then I couldn't get the mechanic on board. Then Sandy hit, Found a new mechanic but he was busy. Then winter came...

Finally got the new main engine wiring harness in yesterday that I was told was 99% certain to fix the problem.

Apparently I've already made it into the 1%.

I got down to the boat yesterday and after some astonishing contortions, and having my cell phone nearby in case I had to call 911 to come get me out, I managed to swap the harness. No joy.

Still smokes, still runs rough, still won't hold idle speed (hunts), still oil in the water. (MANY really BAD words not posted!!)

So, depending on word from the marina on the availability of the mechanic I'm headed down this evening to rip out the interior.

Really sorry to hear that. I imagine Volvo factory reps have had a look? Rip out the interior to allow pulling the engine? If I were closer I'd certainly donate some time..
