Leak/construction detail

My 2003 35 TE has a leak in the forward cabin, starbord bow. It is coming from the deck/hull joint area and runs down the inside of the hull. My local yard couldn't find it so I resumed the search, luckily on a very rainy day. All the ususal suspects, rail and cleat holes were dry. I removed the short screws holding the wiring harness up and water started running out. I could also feel moisture on the top of the inside piece of fiberglass. Everything above is dry.

This is where I am a bit confused. This appears to be an inside liner and you can see the deck outboard of the tan liner and the fastening bolts clearly but where is the hull in this sandwich? Surely they didn't put the deck molding inside the hull as this seems a sure way to get leaks. It seems to me if the hull butted under the deck with the liner acting as a splice there would be two rows of bolts.


Back to the leak, since no water is coming from above i suspect it is wicking up through the joint. I am considering brushing on a thinned coat of resin or two to see if that stops the leak. Any input on the construction detail is appreciated. Thanks Trav

Based on the shape and size of the deck I'm going to assume you're seeing the inner two layers of a 3 layer sandwich, with the hull being outboard of the interior liner and inboard of the deck. I got a brief look at this on our 35 over the weekend when I pulled the galley cabinetry out, but didn't crawl in for a closer inspection.

Here is the hull/deck joint detail from the 28TE tech specs. This is aft of the cabin (see Jack's 2nd photo) where there is no liner, although the thru-bolts are only where the liner is installed. The diagram is therefore a bit misleading..

Thanks for all the great replies. I'm thinking i have water wicking up betweene the hull and deck and will try to seal that area from the inside with some thinned epoxy. i just have to be sure it doesnt leak through on to my freshly painted hull! I'll let you know if this works. Trav

Tape the lower edge of the rub rail to help make sure that doesn't happen!
