A NEAR MISS!

Post by johnmurray »

I have done an extended boat trip over the past couple of weeks, and that trip included parking "katie G" for four days at the Ile Perrot Marina at the west end of Montreal. On 10 July I received a phone call that they had a serious dock fire near my boat but so far as they could tell, my boat was dirty but not damaged. katie G was saved because the wind was blowing away from my boat toward the fire. There were however two boats totally destroyed and two seriously damaged. Subsequent inspected by myslf confirmed that my boat was not damaged.
I have attached two photos, one that shows part of the cabin of my boat and you can see the nearby dock that is under repair where two of the damaged boats were. The other photo shows how badly damaged two boats were when they were hauled out of the water.

 Wow! You were lucky! I would say those other boats are way more than "damaged"!

What was the cause?
Those are older boats, I wonder if they were even insured.
Personal effects on the boat would be covered under most homeowner's policies.

And that wasn't a "near miss" for you! I'll let George explain it

George always explains it well.

Eau-Max may want to remove that propane grill from his stern before someone starts pointing fingers.

John.

It looks like it was almost Katie C on the Barbie!!! There are not enough of the 30 FC's around to lose one. Can you smell the smoke in your boat. Sometimes it is not just the fire that does the damage.

As far as I have been able to find out the fire was caused by a carbuerator malfunction in one the twin-engined gasoline cruisers. The owner jumped out but the fire quickly spread to adjacent boats.
I understand that marina staff and nearby boat owners put water on my boat and others to prevent the fire speading further. While my boat had a lot of ash residue on it, there was no sign of burns marks on either the canvas or the fibreglass and there was no smell of smoke.
