Continuing from another thread-- viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5580&start=15 --that veered off-topic... We were talking about wimpy bow thrusters, and when I last posted, we'd just sent our bow thruster motor to a local DC motor shop to be reconditioned.
Sure enough, it needed new brushes. I don't know yet what else it needed - hope to have an update on that within a few days. But the motor is back in the boat, and we went for a ride this evening. When returning to the dock, there was a light crosswind. Before the rebuild, the bow thruster wouldn't have been able to move the bow against the wind. Now it seems to have more oomph. Put that baby in the slip just like she had twin screws. Perfect landing, just the way I like it.
A few more dockings like this and I'll call the project an unqualified success.

lol, John! If the voltage checks out OK, I highly recommend a rebuild as a next step. Couple hundred isn't a bad price to pay for easy docking.jcollins wrote:looks like I'm in the same Albin as you were.
I came into the dock yesterday in a 10-12 knot crosswind, and the bow thruster was able to turn the boat. Another perfect landing.

Here's what was done to the motor:
New brushes (4)
New bearings (2)
Recondition armature
Test and recondition field coils
Test solenoid pack
I'm guessing the increased power comes from the new bearings, and the lack of time-out from the new brushes.
