Mounting Downrigger Base on 28TE

Mounting Downrigger Base on 28TE
I'm thinking of installing downriggers (probably Cannons) on each side on the gunnels just behind the stern cleats. Has anyone done this and if so, how did you access the backside to thru-bolt the base? Pictures are always appreciated if you did. Thanks in advance for the support I know will be coming from this site.

Re: Mounting Downrigger Base on 28TE
A friend of just gave me a set of Penn fathom masters that already had the swivel bases attached. I will only use these seasonally, and did not want to drill holes to permanently mount them. Penn makes a mount that will slide into your existing corner rod holders in your gunnels. They also make a rod holder that bolts to your down rigger, thus replacing the rod holder being used by the down rigger. I have used the mounts and they work well. Just yesterday ordered the rod holders on line. I will let you know how they work out.
See the link below. Also it looks like Cannon makes the same set up, "gimble mounts".

I use the Penn rod holder mounts and never had a problem.
Re: Mounting Downrigger Base on 28TE
But has anyone ever mounted them to the gunnel? If so, how do you gain access? Thanks

Since the only way I can think of to access the underside of the gunnels aft would be with very long arms from the bilge you may want to consider mounting small deck plates through the inside liner to give you access. Our 35 has a number of these factory installed in strategic spots.
