Stop Button

My stop button isn't killing the engine. I haven't broken out the tools to troubleshoot the issue yet. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

Ken at Standish tells me the switch is normally open and that shorting the terminals will tell me if the switch is bad. I'll also check the voltage on the hot side.

Of course I just had some upgrades to the electronics and my experience tells me that a wire may have been bumped, jiggled, loosened, etc.

FYI she's a 2006 28' with flush deck.

Stop button on most diesels goes to a solenoid which breaks the flow of fuel to the engine and shuts it off. Sometimes the solenoid will quit working which means you have to shut off the fuel another way. Had that trouble on an older Grand Banks with Lehmans, but on those you could manually push the lever on the engine that the solenoid egaged to shut off the fuel. If you have the 315 Yanmars you're not as lucky as there no lever to manually push. Check your connections to the solenoid as with new connections maybe as simple as that. You can also try tapping the solenoid to get it to engage, but if none of that works you are eseentially left cracking open your fuel injectors slightly which will interrupt your flow and shut off the engine, then I'd look to replace the solenoid .

sharffj - Thanks for the ideas. One more clue, the key is killing the engine.

Sounds like the wiring at the STOP button got bumped/disconnected. It should be white with a brown tracer. You can test the switch by checking continuity make/break across it's terminals when the button is pressed.

Didn't want to leave this thread unresolved.

RobS nailed it. When the cables were bundled and wrapped a plug in the bundle was dislodged. Just took a bit of poking to find the break and I didn't need the voltmeter.

The wire was white with the brown tracer per your note. However, the wire was noticeably different on either side of the plug. When I plugged the ends together I had a short debate with myself - "are you going to regret this decision? Nahh, this has got to be the problem." This time being lazy worked out.
