SMOKE

I just took possesion of a 1994 28 albin with a volvo diesel engine. I was taking her to her new home and noticed alot of smoke coming from the exhaust... not Black.... what could be the problem or do diesels just smoke like that .. the engine temp was right at 170-180 the air temp was about 78 this morning and very humid, water temp ???? not to sure... any ideas?? thank you in advance

Is it smoke or steam vapor?

What color is the smoke? Does it have a smell?

Some general indicators:

Black - not enough air - stuck turbo, blocked filter

Blue - Oil

White - Too much fuel (my current issue), fuel timing, or compression issue

Also white - Steam

Yes we need to know the smoke color and what the engine is doing when it smokes, ie comming on plane? start up then clears when warm? all the time at mid rpm when cruising?
On boatdiesel there is an article by Tony Athens about smoke and what it can mean.I don't have it downloaded,but maybe another member does and can post it here.

No, because the owner did NOT mention a power loss.
There is another article that I vaguely remember reading in BD that dealt with smoke and what is "normal".
