Hatch screen so far

Post by Nancy »

I've fabricated a screen for the companionway hatch, and I was very satisfied with the result until I discovered a major design flaw. I assumed there would be enough play in the fabric to allow the last snap to be fastened by reaching around from inside the cabin...but I was wrong. So I'll have to come up with some kind of modification - maybe a small opening with a velcro closure.

But aside from that, I'm pleased. Added benefit is that even with the screen in place, the folding door can be closed for privacy if needed.

The snaps raise the screen from the teak enough that I might decide to attach some foam or other material between the snaps to make a better seal. It's work in progress.

I used 1.5" webbing around the perimeter. I folded it in half and sewed it at the edge and at the fold.

You could probably make up a small magnetic catch for the bottom, rather than a snap.

We are going to do the same with the "As seen on TV" Magic Mesh hands free screen that closes onto magnets. Your workmanship looks top notch! thank for sharing this. :D
