Seeking input on mattresses

Post by Captn_Dwt »

Hi,

We need to replace the mattress on our aft cabin bunk. Tried memory-foam....and don't like it.
I'd like to hear what others have done about buying a mattress, where it was purchased from, and what type.
Part of the difficulty is that this bed has an overhang, which limits the mattress thickness to 6-7 inches; preferably 6.

My thanks to all who can help with this!

I just bought a new mattress for my 40 trawler from a company Called Orange Mattress in NJ. Mistress Mindy the mattress monger was a big help. They can do any size or shape. I have a rear berth with a u shape and slight taper up front where it fits between the night tables. She made it out of real latex foam, cotton wrap and cotton ticking about 8 inches thick. She also made a cotton cover to size. Because I was concerned about getting it in the cabin I had her make it in two halves. This also makes it easy to flip it off if I need to get to the rudder and steery stuff in an emergency. It 'want cheap as you folks in Maine say, but it fit perfect, and the bed is the most important part of the boat next to floating in the water!

On my old Triangle 35 sailboat I replaced all the bunk cushions with foam rubber medium density about 4-1/2 or 5" thick. The secret is to sit on them in the store and see which density does not "bottom out". That way when sleeping on your side your shoulders and hips don't. I also covered them with a nylon upholstery fabric that breathed and was easy to clean as they were used for seating during the day. Hope this helps.

We just put 4" memory foam on out 36' and are adding 2" of latex. Will have results in a week or 2.

Two tyears ago we bought a standard queen sized "Bob-O-Pedic Light" which is a memory foam. Very comfortable. Price was something like $300 and it fits right in. PLUS, they delivered it right to the boat :D

After attempting to sleep on the overly firm cushions in our v berth, we investigated ways to get a comfortable sleep.

Our solution: We used memory foam to lay on top of our cushions. We started with two layers of memory foam, totalling about four inches thick, and modified a mattress pad to cover it. When not in use, the foam pad can be rolled up and tucked behind the forward seat back.

Just got back from sleeping on the boat for 20 nights and our approach worked great for us!

So we ended up buying an innerspring mattress that's 6" thick. Best price was through Amazon, $250 and no shipping fees. Vendor is Excel Distributors. This mattress rolls up! Anyway, it's almost perfect. I'm 160# and she's over 220# and we're comfortable and supported. It's firm, and in the end we're going to add a 1" topper to ease the pressure on the hip-bone. We've used it for several weeks and the issue is minor.
Thanks again for all your input!!

On 2 different boats we have done mattress with 4" memory foam topper. What was reason you didn't like memory foam? Because it was too warm? They now have different types of memory foam to combat that if that was what you didn't like.

After being disappointed by foam mattresses, I bought a custom sized air bed (like the Select comfort) from http://www.regin-inc.com. The 10 " Brio. Had to lower the bed a few inches, which was pretty easy.

I have been 100% happy with it.
