Oil change setup/equipment

Post by Nancy »

What's the group wisdom on techniques and equipment for changing the oil on a Cummins? Oil change system (i.e. electric pump mounted on bucket)? If I remember correctly, the engine holds 17 quarts of oil, so that's a bit much to remove all at once and then move the container out of the boat. Not to mention the fact that I haven't found an oil change system yet that's bigger than 14 qts.

Suggestions welcome.

Many of the bucket mounted pumps are reversible so you can pump out of the bucket into smaller containers for transporting to your recycler. If your engine capacity exceeds your bucket capacity you would just need to do the transfer into the smaller containers in 2 stages.

They are out there mounted on 5 gallon buckets or you can change out the bucket yourself. But either way you are not going to want to carry that much oil in one big container to your recycler.

Good Morning - timely question - baring the installation of a oil change system , what is the best and or easiest tool for changing the the oil, a drill pump or the tank with pump attached or the vacuum pump set up - going out to get one this weekend and see that there are number of options - what is the general consensus ? thanks Grant

I prefer my bucket mounted electric pump. The reversing feature is very convenient for getting the waste oil back into small containers. I have had mine for over 20 years, replaced the impeller about 5 years ago...

I've been using the Jabsco 14 qt. kit with a bronze pump that utilizes a dipstick tube extractor hose ever since I bought the Albin / 9 seasons now. My engine with filter holds 15 qts.. As Rob had mentioned there is a reverser switch on the pump that I flip and pump out the Jabsco bucket into a dedicated 5 gallon plastic "waste" gas can that I have as the Jabsco bucket starts to fill in order to safely finish the job. Remember to take the dipstick hose out of the main rubber hose before flipping the reverse switch or things won't be pretty.

That is the same setup I have but mine sure don't like that pretty anymore.. Another tip: I use my jump pack for 12V as opposed to accessing the batteries.

I have a Jabsco pump with a hose that I just pump into empty gallon containers. When not in use, I keep it in a plastic bag. No bucket to store.

I use a Pela 650 oil Extractor (I could never get the electric motor pumps to work right)
This this creates a vacuum and sucks everything out through dip stick hose

I have a stand alone pump and I pump all ther oil into an old 5 gallon gas can. I started doing that when I had my ex boat with the Cummins 6BTA which held 16 quarts.
The 5 gallon can makes it easy to carry and dispose of and it won't spill in the trunk of your car.
