oil level on a 315 yanmar

when I go down to the boat and engine has been sitting without running I check the oil level and it is way above the full line do I have to start the engine before checking the oil level?

An engine is checked when off. Although if Yanmar's are different it wouldn't shock me... I'm sure Rob will answer that part of the question. So the implication is either that you're overfilled, or that your engine isn't level and the oil is riding high on the side where your dipstick is.

How far above the fill line is it?

(Transmissions are the opposite, and are checked with the engine running, but not in gear)

THE OIL FILTER IS UPSIDE DOWN AND I THINK IT DRAINS BACK INTO THE OIL PAN TO MAKE THE DIPSTICK ONE QUART OVER

My Volvos also have filters that drain down but that's taken into account by the capacity and the dipstick. I'll stick with my earlier comment, I think you're overfilled.

Sounds overfilled to me too. Do you have the sencond dipstick, the one near the starter? Not all 6LP's were equipped with it. It is more accurate than the one going to the base of the pan. If you don't have it there is a kit you can get to install it. It's the only one I ever check. You may have it and never knew it was there. It's tucked away on the side of the engine. I can post a pic if you need (not connected to my file server at the moment).

Also, do you measure the oil you get out when you do your change? You should. Depending on how effective your oil removal is you may be adding more than you are taking out. This will also tell you if you are losing any oil.

I will check for the other dip stick and the next time I change the oil I will measure how much oil comes out I put 10 quarts when I do oil changes ?
