Replacement hose - heat exchanger to exhaust outlet

Post by dkircher »

Hi all,

I have an aftermarket hose on my heat exchanger to exhaust outlet connection. I have a 1998 28 TE with the Cummins 330 HP.

I'll try to post a photo. In any event, does anyone know of a supplier of a molded hose?

I have an aftermarket (Autozone) hose on my 6BTA-330's that looks a lot like yours. I don't think there is a standard molded hose because the exhaust setup is customized for most every boat.

That hose is not referred to as a molded hose, that's a corrugated (or flex) hose made for when bends are required. Search google for marine corrugated hose just be sure it's for engine seawater, etc. A local marine engine parts supplier should have a stock that can be cut to length or that may have one time had a molded hose from Cummins? It would be worth posting that photo on boatdiesel.com.

I had the same corrugated hose leading from my heat exchanger to to the exhaust elbow, but with the 370 it was more dramatic of a bend resulting in restricted flow. I replaced it with wet exhaust hose #252 Lloyds which is wire reinforced / bends the full 90 degrees that I needed. No more kink or restriction providing for a full flow of sea water. Trident and other manufacturers are out there too. This is the path to follow as this is the right hose for the job.

Remember heat exchanger hoses and hot water tank hoses are add ons.
No need to go to Cummins.

I know the marine suppliers stock rolls of the corrugated hose to be sold by the foot which is what I was referring to above but the only reason I even mentioned Cummins was that the hose pictured has cuff ends so it appears it was not from a long stock? Unless they are sold aftermarket at pre-cut lengths with cuff ends...

I hear what you mean about the cuffs on the hose. It would seem like the right way to go. When I first went to replace the hose I called my local Cummins supply house and they recommened NAPA as they did not stock the hose. I first bought a piece of linear corrugated from my local autoparts store and had the same issue. It just was not rigid enough for that dramatic of a bend. The wet exhaust hose is practically uncrushable.

Thanks guys for the insight into the history of these hoses and the best replacement that won't restrict flow. I'll go with Kevin's recommendation and buy some of that Lloyds hose...
