albin 28 questions
Hi, We bought an Albin 28te 2002 last fall and had it sent to Canada. We have put it in the water last week and are very happy with our boat. We will be going up the Richelieu river to the St-Lawrence and then to Lake Ontario where we will fish for salmon this summer before return to QUebec via the Rideua canal and Ottawa back to the St-Lawrence and Richelieu. We are located in Beloeil, QUebec.
Questions,
1- Where can I get the 6 six porthole screens for the the 28TE? The one one the boat are a little corroded.
2- The table in the cabin doesn't want to come apart to make a bed, where does it seperate and is there a trick to it?
3- Full speed at 24knts RPM at 3900, is this OK?
Cruising at 18knts with RPM at 3400 is this OK?
What should be full speed on a 28TE with a Yanmar 315 6LP and RPM?
Waht should be a good cruising speed and what should be the right RPM for the cruising speed?
Engine temperature when cruising at 18knts is 170, is this OK?

The table should push down to make the v-berth ready for sleeping. Some have had trouble with the post sticking but usually you just loosen the clamp push it down and tighten the clamp to hold it in that position.

You didn't mention whether you have plastic or stainless portholes. Our boat has the plastic ones, and they're stamped with the name of the manufacturer, Beckson Marine - http://www.beckson.com - and they have lots of replacement parts. You probably have eight portholes. Did you miss the two at the quarter berth?
The table pedestal and the post have a notch or slot. When put together correctly, the table goes up and down easily. Maybe yours is jammed in the wrong position as ours was.
Have fun on Lake Ontario! Let me know if you head to Lake Champlain.

If they're Beckson 5"X 12" I just replaced mine. Defender Marine had them in stock.

Welcome! You can go direct to Beckson for the screens or for different parts of the porthole. I have the plastic ones. Beckson is in Bridgeport Connecticut and they are at www.beckson.com. Screen is the 5 x 12 at $16.50 each. When I replaced the older one, I needed to take out a thin frame to be able to get them to fit. I worried about getting a leak but have not had that happen.
The table should slide up and down and uses some kind of gas in a piston to help it pop up. You should have a knob you turn to secure or loosen the table support post. I find I have to use my weight to get it to slide down to secure it at the lower position to convert it into a berth.
24 knots at 3900 sounds very good. I try to run at 3250and 17 to 18 kts depending on current, wind and full load of fuel or not. I get a very pleasing 4.5 to 5 gals per hour. That's my cruising speed and I rarely run it faster.

This is coincidental... I just logged in to the AOG site and read this post. Just about an hour or so ago I ordered 4 port screens from Defender as well as a replacement lens because I had one break this weekend. The screens are item 900144 (BECKSON MARINE SCREEN) and cost me $14.99 each.

WOW! 18 kts/5 gph...That's 3.6 mpg if I understand correctly. If this is accurate, it would be
much better that anything I have heard of. Do I have these numbers right?

We just got and installed 6 port screens obtained from Defender, as referenced above. Table issue discussed above, but I will also tell you that if you remove the screws and then the carpet, there's another access area to the bilge I desperately needed to get to in my entire bilge cleaning project. I like cruising at 3200 rpm's which is about 17 knots, + or - depending on currents, wind etc. On the return trip from picking up Steel Hers in Annapolis, I estimate we used about 8 gph or 2 mpg, which matched up well with all I've read here. Hope that helps.

Galey, sorry I just saw your post. I have checked a few times and have discussed with the Mack Boring people at boat shows. They say I'm lucky when I tell them but it seems consistent. I want to check it again but have to fill the tank to do so. Albin says it should be 7 to 8 gph. I run at 3250 rpm but a mechanic just told me to run it higher from time to time to get wetness out. He said 3900 should be safe.

Jack, I just came across this thread and saw your comment about 3900. Is that correct? Since you said you were talking to Mack Boring, I beieve you have a 315 Yanmar. 3900 is the max the engine should achieve without over propping or is it under propping? If you can get 3900, what prop are you using? I am still working on my prop and can hit 3800 <. A little more tweaking at B&S and I hope to hit 3900. After the season I should have a better picture of my new and improved, cost alot of shecklesw prop.

I have the Albin 30FC which is essentially identical to the 28 except that is stretched by two feet to allow for the aft cabin. I have the same Yanmar engine as you.
Since I am located on the route you plan to take back you are welcome to stop and have a look and maybe get some answers to any further questions. I am at the Rockcliffe Yacht Club which is on the Ottawa River about four miles below the Ottawa Locks, on your way to Montreal. (Do not confuse us with the Rockcliffe Boat House Marina which is a commercial marina on the Ottawa side opposite the mouth of the Gatineau River.) Our docks come out on 13 October.
If you need fuel in the Ottawa area, get it before the Ottawa Locks, possibly at Hurst Marina (near the Long Island Locks) or at Dow's Lake Marina in Ottawa. It is hard to find diesel on the Ottawa River.
