28TE carpet replacement

Post by Nancy »

We need to replace the carpet in our cabin. I suspect the existing carpet is the original. It's quite flimsy, which is good in a way as it allows for easy folding for access to the floor hatch and conforms easily to the sloped sections of the sole. But it's not very good-looking.

What wisdom do you have for me as I try to figure out what to use? It's such a small area that maybe it doesn't matter too much. We plan to have it bound and install snaps to prevent slippage.

We don't want a rubber-backed carpet as we don't want to trap moisture. Can we use standard carpet? Is it flexible enough to lie well on the sloped section and stay flat at the transition from flat to sloped?

Nancy - Our original 03 carpets needed to go. Spoke to a local canvas guy who highly recommended going with a decent quality "standard" carpet. Said to avoid rubber backing since it's interior carpet - not worth the up charge.

Went to a local carpet shop with the originals and found a remnant that matched to the tune of $70 (2 pieces cut and bound). Salesman at the carpet shop was a boat owner who also recommended standard carpet for the interior. Said for the cost you could replace ever year if necessary and still be ahead.

Back to the canvas guy for snaps for another $40. Went to install tonight - snaps are off a bit so be careful. But otherwise a very inexpensive way out. The new carpet is great.

Standish installed Teak and Holly for me this winter to replace that original carpet...pictures to follow.

I thought I was getting that vinyl product by Ken upgraded me to the real thing. Looks great. I am going to toss a small rug with onto the floor over the access to the shower drain pump.

Pasteur,

That is my dream - either the vinyl or the real thing. My husband has a different dream, however. I have samples of Plasteak and it looks very good. I'm sure the Amtico product is similar.

I'd love to see your photos. I'm especially interested in how the edges of the wood are handled. Where the wood stops, is dirt going to collect between that edge and the fiberglass sole?

I replaced my carpet a couple of seasons back. Went to the local carpet store with my old carpet to use as a template, selected something a bit more plush and in a week I picked up the new carpet fully bound to bring to my canvas guy who installed the snaps. Presto ... beautiful!

I did have thoughts of doing a teak floor, but decided the carpet was easier to maintain. Just unsnap and shake it over the side.

Nancy,

I snapped some pics of the teak and holly with closeups of the seams. I didn't check the photos until I got them in my computer. Unfortunately the auto focus did a poor job so I'm only uploading two shots for now.

The carpenter glued the wood down. At the edges it seems that he filled it in with a clear product, perhaps the glue, so there is no crease that can be filled with dirt.

Overall I like how it turned out. The hatch that he built isn't perfect fit to the hole, but it may be that I need to get it set correctly. The fellow was a good carpenter, but not much of a cleaner so I have some spots to remove. The hatch is also a bit less solid than the old one felt. The teak is backed by a good piece of plywood - maybe 5/8s - so it's rugged enough.

My biggest concern is that I'll drop something on it. I store my sinkers just below the steps ladder for example and I can just imagine the damage that a 6 oz piece of lead will do. So I am putting a welcome mat over the hatch.

Good luck with yours.

Ken installed my teak & holley sole about 7 years ago. Still looks good. I use Mop & Glow every once in a while to keep it looking good.
I do have a couple of small dents from dropped lead sinkers though

Your post is pretty old, but I saw it and thought I'd reply just in case you haven't found a solution. I have a really nice set of custom-made carpet sections for my 28TE which I'm willing to give away - just pay for shipping! I just put up a post (with photo's) in the "sale/swap" forum on this site - Look for the post or e-mail me directly at: tommccandless3@gmail.com
