Good Prop shop in Ct?

Post by jleonard »

Looking for recommendations for a good prop shop in Ct. Someplace some of our members have had success with.
I know Hale in Saybrook, I've done business with them in the past. Been running a prop tuned by them 6 years ago, just looking for someone else.
After 6 seasons it's time for a tune up.
Would also like it be a place that uses "propscan" or the Hale system because I want it done right.
I prefer to drive it there, not interested in someplace I have to ship to.
Thanks.

I spent some time chatting with Larry from AccuTech at the Newport boat show last year. I am sure you have come across him on boatdiesel.com. Very technical guy. A short way into the conversation I thought we were talking rocket science not boats. It was a good thing I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering! I have no first hand experience working with him but he seems very well resepcted on BD. http://www.accutechmarine.com/

There is also H&H who fitted the Albins for quite some time. Again, I have spoken with them on the phone but no first hand experience. http://www.hhprop.com/

The local shop here on LI that I have always used is http://www.bosslerandsweezey.com/

Hope this helps..

Thanks but unfortunately none of those are within what I call striking distance. I know I can contract thru a marina and get it picked up, but then I get my prop fixed the way that marina wants it fixed, not how I want it tuned. I may have to go that way but prefer another approach.
That's like asking a contracter to simply "Add a room to my house" without having any input or control.
Not that I'm a control freak, but I want to get what I am paying for.

Its not that costly to ship the prop. Stop in a UPS store with it and they will give you a price. Probably under $30

Times 2. Plus I would need to build a wood crate or wood reinforced heavy box.
I'd rather not.

i've used Machine & Marine on Bridge Street in Groton and been very happy. They are in the shopping strip whose parking lot leads into the roller skating rink parking lot just before the bridge to New London.

Hey Jay,

Did you ever get the props done? I've used Pitch Perfect down here in southern CT, and a friend has used him a few times as well, including just last month for repair work from a little grounding incident. The work he did made a huge difference with Sonny III. He's a "PropScan" shop.

I'm not sure if he's working at the prop business full time (the great boat economy) but he is active and I think he travels around a fair amount, so shipping might not be needed. You can reach him at (845) 430-3763. Chuck Gray.

I decided to not get it redone. I did run across that guy's advertisement but by his e mail response he sounded like a garage business with no equipment. I wrote him off because I felt I could not trust him.

Too bad for him. He puts out a very poor message.

I've used Hale and have had good service by them. Just very hard for me to get to. Last time I had a very hard time arranging a saturday that I could meet him there to drop off and then pick up.
