Repowering A27/Aft Cabin

Post by philipsyrrist »

I might have figured this wonderful site out....1986 aft cabin needs repowering.I heard a lot good being said about Yanmar diesel. Which model would be the best (rebuildt) to look for ? How to make sure the engine dimentions will physically fit ? Seems like I could go upto around 150 HP.- Any suggestions ?. AND by the same token I have a 1986 Nissan 6 Cyl. 78 hp for part/s or similar. Believe crankshaft problems.....Regards Philip in Westport CT

I hope your repower works out well. Do you intend to keep your nissan Engine and be able to sell parts as some of us might need them? or are you intrested in disposing of the entire engine as soon as the repower is done. I cant offer any advise on a repower as I have no experience in that field. I think a nice new and more powerful engine will be fun. Good luck. Joe

To make sure an engine will fit you'll have to make a scetch of your engine room. Distance between stringers, height from top of stringers to bottom of hatches, length of space between bulkhead and shaft log.
You should also consider a Cummins 4 BT "Recon" package. Should be 150 hp. These are Cummins rebuilt enignes. I know the 6BT recons are excellent values. If you are a good mechanic and could handle marinizing an engine, there are tons of 4BTs out there in trucks for cheap.

The Yanmar 4LH series has a great reputation. It's not a screamer like the 6LP series. Eith the Cummins or the Yanmar should do you fine. Jay's suggestion on the recon is a great one. Here's some specs on both.

I have Cummins 4BT's in my Nimble 34 and love everything about them EXCEPT engine vibration.
