Proper Propeller for Albin28 TE/ 300 Yanmar 2001

[I have to replace my propeller ...having a job to find the proper propeller ..seems the serial #'s on the prop I have now a (teignbridge 19 x 19) don't correspond to the #'s the distributor has on file .They stock a variety of different cupped props ...Just want to know what I should order for my 2001 Albin 28 TE with the 300 HP Yanmar .so as I get the proper one .

Most good propeller shops will work withyou to get the right prop or modify the one you have to get the desired effect. (more rpms or less rpms) I have a 19x18 teinbridge prop with a little cup in it but my boat is a flushdeck with a 315 yanmar. Find a good prop shop with recomendations in your area. My 1999 has the Yanmar as well and the prop is a 19x19 with a medium cup on the edge.

You should get in touch with H&H Propeller, Salem, Massachusetts, USA. They provided the running gear to Albin for the 28TE and other designs for many years, your vintage included. They'll need your engine & transmission info and with a few key strokes they'll have it for you ... size and proper cup. They will take the gues work out.

My 2002/315 yanmar had a 19x19 and was swapped for a 17.5x17.5 per Yanmar to allow the boat to rev to 3950 rpms. they indicated that the albin 28s were over propped and that caused/s valve problems. ??? My 19x19 sits as decor in our lanai.

The valve problems on the Yanmars weren't just Albin related. Lots of information out there on the Yanmar recall. Reworking that 19 x 19 with less cup would bring the RPM's up on that prop as well. The bigger 4 bladed props on the single screw tend to give her some "arse" and control when backing down.

I realize the valve problem was general to yanmar and not related only to Albins. I do about 27.5 mph at 3950 rpms with the 17.5x17. Since I have the 19 incher which has a 17.5 pitch per a professional prop shop, I would be interested in a comparison. The previous owner data said he could not get above 3750 rpms even with the modification of the pitch and thus changed to the smaller prop (17.5 x 17).

Would you be interested in selling the your 19x19 prop? I have a 17 and am under propped, I have the only 28 with a 300hp Cat 3116, its a 2800 rpm motor and puts out more torque than the Yanmars, prop shop recommends a 19".

John - Sail410 has the 19 x 19 mounted in his lanai not me. I'm running a 19 x 21. I was thinking the same as you, but only reworking as a spare for those summer getaways to the rocky coast of Maine.

The basic rule of thumb for each degree of pitch increase the prop speed will decrease by 100 RPMs. Down by 1 degree will increase your RPMs by 100. Down 2 degrees will bring you up 200 RPMs.

The Yanmar 28's were originally equipped by H&H with 19x19 4-bladed wheels. As the exhaust valve hang-up issue became known and connected to over-propping they realized that the 28's were over propped. As always, trying to get the best cruise speed from a specific setup. Maybe it was not bad as a dealer demo but once that boat gets fully loaded with fuel, water, people, gear and more gear the rpm's were not being turned. This was further complicated by the inaccurate tach that Yanmar supplied with it's earlier factor "C" panel as this tach read 100-200 rpm's high. H&H then started equipping the Yanmar 28's with a 19x18 to get some rpm's back.

I started with a 19x19 with a heavy cup and tried a 19x19 with a light cup and noticed that she was not as smooth or responsive without the cup. I have since had the pitch dropped to 18 and put the cup back in and am now reaching proper rpm's.

The extra cup in the prop is needed due to the turbulence created by the skeg keel.

No too boats are alike but a 19x18 medium cup should be a good safe starting point. You should be able to get your prop re-pitched for about 25% of the cost of a new one...
