Amber J starting overhaul
She arrived Dec.23rd.I was able to put her inside for 3 or 4 weeks.WE have lots of work for our refit.Upholestry, engine cleanup, cockpit cover, teak flooring,a good polishing and whatever else we can find time for.I'm consider myself pretty fortunate to have a good friend with a boat canvas and upholestry shop(heated). It took the better part of the first day just to get the boating and fishing gear the previous owner had given us.Then another day to wash the 500 miles of road crud off from her trip from Lido Beach N.Y.to her new home.I had to scrub her down wet and use a wet pick up vacuum to dry up.We were not able to get back outside to use the pressure washer unless I hired a truck and hydraulic trailer.Well I'm off tomorrow to remove striping and compound the green, and also remove the registration numbers and the old name from the transom. We will let you know what's happening in a week or so and post more pics. This was my first time figuring out how to get the picture on the posting.

She looks great. I see you are removing the old name. I have been a firm believer in "De-naming & Re-naming" ceremonies. We have performed each for all our boats and have had good luck with each. You may want to check it out. Very best of luck with yours. She really is a beauty!
Best regards and Happy New Year,
Paul

Paul is there any specific ceremony you go by,or just search anyone out .Our previous boat burned and we were thinking of registering her with the same name(AmberJ).Our previous boat was a searay Amberjack and also our daughters names our Amber and Jennifer. It was sort of dual purpose.

Whether you believe in this or not it is fun to do. This is the one we used in the 90s. We renamed that boat from Black Jack to Julia Sea. I owned it for 13 years and never had major problems.amber j wrote:Paul is there any specific ceremony you go by,or just search anyone out .Our previous boat burned and we were thinking of registering her with the same name(AmberJ).Our previous boat was a searay Amberjack and also our daughters names our Amber and Jennifer. It was sort of dual purpose.

Re: Amber J starting overhaul
Would you mind telling me what you ended up paying for the transport per mile. I'm looking at a 28ft in Iowa and was wondering what would cost less, the trip up the river to the Great lakes or a truck.
Thanks
Peter

Is keeping the prior owner's name considered bad luck?jcollins wrote:Whether you believe in this or not it is fun to do. This is the one we used in the 90s. Re: Amber J starting overhaul
Peter trucking was quite expensive $4500.00 from Freeport N.Y. To Courtland Ont.Can.We could have done It for $500 less using a lowboy trailer, but would have hire a crane to offload when reaching our destination. Also with a crane we would not be able to place it inside the shop. With the hydraulic trailer we were able to place it inside quite easily.Another factor in the cost was about another $1000 for permits and police escort across NewYork city.He had to load during the day, then wait until midnight or after before he crossed the city.Once he was over the bridges he had to wait for daylight to carry on again. The $1000 was included in that price. To answer your question it was about $9.00 per mile .American and Canadian companies were comparable in pricing other than with a U.S.firm I had to deal with the higher currency exchange and my driver was familiar with the destination at Convert A Boat. Sunvale I had my 28 hauled from, Maryland to Ontario Can by BBB Transporter out of Mich . Price was good 2300 US with Wide Load permits for 4 states and Ont http://bbbtransporter.com/boatslayout.html # 586 995 3500 The 28 is a bit cheaper to haul because it is not as wide I think and no escort vehicle is required The fellow was good to work with and he likes to work things out so he is hauling something each way and helps keep the price dwn .

Re: Amber J starting overhaul
Well finally finished the with the rubbing compound. All the glue from the pin striping, logos, and name is off. That will make a good clean base to reapply.Brian from Auto Trim in Norwich is coming tomorrow to reapply. Then back to waxing,I don't think this will be quite as bad.I'm not sure how to get rid of the ghosting impression on the gelcoat from the registration numbers and name on the transom.I'm afraid to use too course of a compound for fear of going through the gelcoat. I would also like to strip the bottom paint,I figured on getting a price on soda blasting, but someone suggested sandblasting, but I'm sure that is no no.Any other suggestions?

The gelcoat is pretty thick on these boats. You could wet-sand with no problems.I'm afraid to use too course of a compound for fear of going through the gelcoat

Re: Amber J starting overhaul
I don't think so. I kept the prior owners name with this boat. - Afterglow. The definition just fits.RobS wrote:Is keeping the prior owner's name considered bad luck?jcollins wrote:Whether you believe in this or not it is fun to do. This is the one we used in the 90s.
