Thanks again Rob for the help with my prop puller. I bought the prop puller shown in the eBay link below for about $90. Fits great on my shaft/prop and I finally got around to installing my 4 Blade 19L19 #5 tip cup recently balanced spare prop on Island Belle. Nice smooth ride at WOT - 23.8 Kts - 3830 RPM photo tach - production gage varies but usually around 4050 RPM. I have added Manifold Pressure (pickup off the turbo) and get 30psi at WOT and Exhaust Gas Temp (probe into manifold at exit elbow) and get 1190 deg F at WOT. I usually check WOT briefly each time I run to verify that everything is OK. Frank our local Marine Pro mechanic (really good ) convinced me its the only way to know whats happening in my Yanmar.

I used a Walter Machine prop puller in attempt to remove my prop. This puller has three "claws" to grip the forward end of the hub. After an hour or so, I was able to pull the prop to within an 1/8" towards the end of the shaft, and that is it, no further. The keyway is frozen and have been unable to knock it out. Any thought out there on how to get the wheel off. I figure it has been on there for at least 5-10 years. Since today is a 13 degree day, I think I will wait till the weekend before I attempt anything creative.

Thanks,
Max

I would hit it hard with WD-40, Marvel Mystery Oil, or your favorite brand of "stuff" to loosen rusty metal.
Then I would snug the prop back on by that 1/8 inch (to distribute the compound and to make sure the prop is back on straight), then make another attempt with the puller. A propane torch on the prop hub will expand it a little and might help. If you have a brass or lead or plastic dead blow hammer you could give the side of the hub a few good whacks to help "motivate" it.
I had a very hard time getting mine off this fall (my key was also stuck), until I really leaned on the wrenches. Trust me the puller won't break. (If it does it was junk to begin with)

Well, I haven't tried the Mravel yet, but you never know. I know Absolute doesn't work. My buddy and I are going to take a whack at it on Saturday, The temp should be above freezing then or not! Perhaps at the NYC boat show they will have a special tool trhat will do the job but cost less than the boat.

Thanks for you input

Ok, I don't want you going into this blind.

Put the puller on, leaving one nut loose on the shaft.
Load the puller up real good.
I use a regular propane turbo torch. Heat the hub of the prop between the blades. It will discolor but you won't have enough heat to get it red.
This between two or thee blades.
when you think it's hot enough wack it from the fwd side w/ the brass bar on the hub

As stated...heat first then whack. But after you described what you did I would first re-snug it to make sure it is on the taper straight. Otherwise you'll be fighting yourself. Mine actually came off fairly easily once I re-tightened mine with no heat, no beat,

The prop is only 1/8" from the end of the shaft and the hub of the prop is over the threads on the shaft. Heat, whack, beat, pull, its all good for Saturday, boat show tomorrow. Thanks for comments.

Considering the tapered shaft that's an odd spot to be stuck. The key is likely jammed. I would certainly make a point of going back on before pulling any further. You can easily spot a boat from the south shore of Long Island with those nicely polished prop edges

Quogue canal, south side, eastern end before Tiana and Shinnecock Bay. Also, my slip at low is only 3 feet, mostly silt but it does wash and polish the prop

I had heard about the canal grounding on the way to Shelter Isl last year. That canal certainly has its spots, some areas are 30ft and the you go barely a few ft out of the channel and your suckin muck. Some strong currents too...

Negative. I feel like John Henry working on the railroad with all the whacking I have been doing. I was Forced to call in my local marine mechanic to remove trhe prop. Hopefully by the weekend. Rob suggested I remove the rudder and dig a cesspool hole and pull the shaft out. The only problem with that is the water table where I live is so low, my prop may wind up in water.

We'll see.
