31 TE fuel consumption

Post by Nancy »

Would be interested to know the fuel burn at cruise and hull speed on a 31 TE with Cummins 315 engine.

Thank you--

That's the boat in North Carolina, right?

I sold that boat to the original owner against my better judgement. He was a sailor and did not not want to go fast, and he was not disappointed. We had to put a transom extension on the boat to get it to plane. I think it would run maybe 13-14 knots at high cruise with the engine working overtime.

Give that one a pass and buy this instead (ex-Tuxedo)

I was asking in general, although I know the NC boat has this engine. Maybe it would be better to ask first what engines the 31 TE's are equipped with, what works well, and what doesn't. I think you're saying that the boat is underpowered with a Yanmar 315. Would like to hear more.

Twin Yanmar 315s are fine. The boat I referred is a single 315 Cummins. It is underpowered.

I have seen 31s with single 315 Cummins, single 370 Cummins, single 420 Cats and single 450 Cummins. In my opinion, for the single engine version, the 450 Cummins is the right engine.

A single 450 Cummins will cruise at 18 knots burning about 18 gph.

I have also seen twin 300 Peninsulas, twin 315 Yanmars and twin 370 Cummins. For twins, the 315 Yanmars seem to be the most popular.

Mahalo can answer about performance.

Tom,
I wish I was ready to buy. Tuxedo was always a favorite. I really like the roll-up canvas instead of doors.

Just my opinion,

The current owner took it to Canada and back, after I took it to the Bahamas and back, so the boat has been in 3 countries and the length of the East Coast. The pictures still show it looking good. I think the current owner is as fussy as I was.

Best boat I ever owned. I'd still have it if we didn't have to run so far to fish.

Yes, ex-Tuxedo appears to still be owned by a caring Capt. It's also good to see someone who knows how to take proper photos for selling a boat, everything cleared of personal effects, no clutter...

I have been aboard multiple 31TE's, both single 450 and twin 315's. I would agree, in a single the 450 should be considered, nothing less. My single yanmar would cry having to push that boat all by itself! The 31 is nearly twice the boat of the 28TE.

Thanks, Tom. What will the 450 Cummins burn at hull speed?

And thanks to all about the heads up re: adequate HP.

Hull speed, meaning just before it goes on plane, about 8 knots? Damn near nothing, maybe 2+ gph.

Why did Albin build the boat with this engine if it wouldn't plane?

Your old boat is gorgeous!

I just topped off the tanks. When I entered the fuel in the log I had to go back and chech my credit card statements to be sure I didn't miss an entry. In the last 55 hours we burned 174 gal. That's about 3.2 GPH. I did a lot of trolling but also had one day that we ran it for four hours. Rock Hall to Tilghman to Deale Island to Annapolis to Bay Bridge Marina and back to Rock Hall. Overall since purchase we have burned about 6gph over 375 hours.
We don't have far to go to go fishing. Sometimes I run slow all the way there just to have time to get the rods ready.
It will run up to 21 maybe 22 kts but goes best around 18.
So far we have had no problems with the 450 Cummins.

Nancy,
Search for a post "End of season totals". That will give you a pretty good idea of fuel burn. I try to update every year. It's been pretty consistent.

I have a 2003 31TE with a Yanmar 440. GREAT boat. Tops out around 21-22 knots. Very happy cruise at 17-18 and it won't break you at the fuel dock.
