New member with old questions

Hello all,
We just purchased an 1985 27 SE with a Westerbeke W100. I really like the space on this one and we've been working away at it since we put it in the water a couple weeks ago. From looking at other posts this boat should cruise around 7-8 kts and top out around 12 kts WOT I believe. Ours tops out at 7.5 kts at 3000 RPM and cruises at 5 kts at 2000 RPM. I'm thinking some prop adjustment may be required. Are there and suggestions for diameter and pitch? I'm also wondering if a 4 bladed prop might help with maneuvering, particularly in reverse where I seem to get very little steerage.
Secondly I have to replace some injection lines and fix a coolant leak, I priced out some Westerbeke parts and they're pretty dear. It's my understanding that Westerbeke just marinizes other manufacturers engines, does anyone know who made the W100, I'm hoping for a secondary parts source?

I have a Westerbeke genset...yes they have some nice gold plated parts.
You won't get steerage in reverse with a single inboard. It will "crab" in one direction depending on whether you have a LH or RH prop. Learn what the natural motion is then plan accordingly. Learn how to "back and fill". Chapman's describes it perfectly.
Changing to a 4 blade prop won't help backing much.
What's the no load rpm on that engine?

I also have an A27SC (1986) with the Westerbeke W100. When I bought it the tachometer was way off and I replaced it with a digital tachometer. The original showed the engine idle at 750 rpm and Wide Open throttle (WOT) of 3700 rpm. With the new tach the idle was 450 (explained the very rough idle) and at WOT was 2700 RPM ( over propped). It would cruise at 2500 rpm and 9.5 knots with a WOT speed of 11 knots. (Over propping is not good for the engine) I had the prop re-pitched and now I get 8.3 knots at 2500 rpm and WOT 10 Knots and 3150 RPM. A little under propped now but better for the engine than over propped. Have your tach checked before playing with the prop. I bought a hand held digital tach to verify mine and then decide to replace the original with an Aetna tach.

You won't get much steerage in reverse on these boats. She probably has a left hand prop so she will walk to starboard while backing. So backing into a slip with the dock on the starboard side is the way to go. I had a port side dock and I gave up on backing in. When the wind was on the port side it was a pain without help on the dock to handle lines. I now have a starboard side dock and back the A32CB in even in the wind with no problems. Being able to approach with the slip on the starboard side and turn to port until I am lined up to back in. I always make my turn a little early. Keep the wheel hard over to port and start backing. There is a posting with a great description on doing this her on the AOG someplace.....

Best I can come up with is it looks like the Westerbeke W100 may be based on the Mazda ZB T4100. I have attached a few pictures as PDF's. I do have Filter numbers but they are on the boat. The glow plugs are a standard NGK# and can be bought for a fraction of the cost of the Westrebeke part. If you need them pull one out and get the number off it. Most of the raw water pump parts are available from other places and is a sherwood R-10870 pump.

We've been away for a few days sorry for the late reply. My thanks to John Loos for the photo and info, it sure looks like the engine, I'll check it out. I think you are right about the tach, mine sticks once in a while I've noticed at startup, the idle reads 900 RPM warmed up.

If the W-100 is indeed a Mazda T4100 (or possibly the T4000), then the oil filter should be a wix 51725 and the fuel filter a 33395 or 33390, if the wix online parts lookup is reliable. I will verify this after I service one in the near future.
