Just wanted to say HI!!
I am Charles & my wife is Jane and we live in the Philadelphia area.
Last October (2010) we purchased a 1985 Albin 43 Sundeck in Connecticut and brought her to her new home.
The boat, was relatively in good shape and the one item which caught my eye was the >500 hrs on the engines. The twin Ford Lehman 135 engines were just getting broken in according to the 2 surveyors I had look her over before I handed a check over.
The downside of a boat with less than 500 hrs on the engines is that the boat was used as a 'Boatel' and therefore needs everything from a windlass, to an inverter, to a dingy, and then some, to 'finish' her off for cruising, which we hope to do a lot of. There will be some updating as well since the cushions need to be 'updated', a new mattress (what is there is a series of foam pads) is needed, curtains will be added. The list will go on & on as I'm sure you all know.
Currently we are on the Sassafras River and will be for the summer.
Oh, we named her Nepidae (Nep a day) which is the family of the water scorpion. Both my wife and I are Scorpio's and we love the water and the water scorpion likes still, calm water which I hope we encounter a lot of, but if not, she's built to handle some swells (the first day bringing her down we encountered 4-6' swells on the Long Island Sound which she rode like a trouper).
I'm hoping that the list will be understanding of some of my questions as time goes on and I look forward to the feedback that hopefully will ensue.
Best regards to everyone.

Welcome aboard! She looks great!
And if she calmly handles snotty LIS conditions she should handle most anything!

Re: Just wanted to say HI!!
Hello Charles and Jane,
Welcome aboard. The Sassafras is a beautiful river. I was just there yesterday.
I got fuel at Baltimore Yacht Club and decided to take advantage of the perfect weather. I set course for Pooles Island, then Fairlee, then Whorten, then...kept going. It was FAC.
I took the "office" with me. Laptop, Sprint aircard, and cell phone. The only problem was when a call came in they wanted to know "what's all that noise"? Traffic...
Will you make it to St. Michaels?

Dear Charles and Jane,
Welcome aboard. As you probably already realize - this group is a wealth of valuable information. We have a 1986 A 34. I love your name - "Nepidae". I've caught several water scorpions this spring so far on class field trips and the students are always amazed at their special adaptations. Just as you both are about to customize your Albin to suit yourselves! Good luck with her - she is beautiful. Marcy

One way to look at it is that those things would probably be broken or worn out anyway so you get to have new toys !

What a beautiful boat and too find it with only 500 hrs on the engines is perfect. Welcome AOG. My wife Nov 12, our son Nov 12 and my DOB Nov 1 and we ae ll Scorpio's. Only problem with that is 3 headstrong people. We have managed to make it work anyway. Great name for the boat. That is just a really pretty nice boat. Enjoy.
