Need rod holder inserts

Post by rcornejo »

I have a 1997 28' TE with factory rod holders. A friend of mine builds custom rods and the butt sections got all scratched up when we went fishing due to the sharpness of the edges on the rod holders. Does anyone know where I can buy rod holder inserts for the rod holders to prevent this from happening in the future? I have found ones from Perko, Lee's, etc. but I am not sure if they would work. Thanks in advance for any help or info that you can provide.

Roland,
I'm assuming you're talking about the "rod grommets" on the inside of the cockpit? You might be able to use thick neoprene sheet from a dive shop, which you could then cut to shape. I also removed the round trim rings and bleached out the mildew with Tilex.

I believe you are referring to the rod holders atop the gunnels. They were normally supplied to Albin by Prime Industries.

Hi Joe and Rob,

Thanks for your input. Do you know if the angle on the rod holders is 30 degree?

If you are talking about the rubber sleeves that fit down into the metal rod holders they sell them at Worst Marine for about $8 in black or white. I keep spares on board as they have a habit of coming out with the rod when you have a really big fish on and then dropping into the drink.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the link. I will call and see if they can send those to me. My rod holders do not have a brand listed on them so I don't know for sure if they are the ones that came with the boat. I suspect they are.

Ric,
Thanks, I will check with them tomorrow as well. There is a store near my home and could be an easy fix.

By the way, I wish I could make one of the trips the group takes. Being in South Texas, makes it very difficult for me.

The store here has them in both colors, in stock, on the rack where the accessory rod holders are. Just looked em' up and they are $9 change now.  Why don't you join us at the NE Rendezvous? Jump a Southwest flight to Islip NY. Rob came the first year with no boat. We thought he was just trying to impress that pretty date of his. Turned out he did have a boat and that was his wife. :P

The Prime Industries rod holders have no name on them so it sounds like it is indeed what you have.

Are you saying my boat is my wife or that pretty date was my wife, or both

Roland, I also have a 97 28TE and replaced one of my inserts with the Prime Industries product. It fit fine.

Hi Ric,

That is a great idea. My wife has been wanting to go NY for many years. Do you know if there are some places near where the group will be?

Shelter Island is a very chi-chi area of Long Island, there are plenty of beach resorts, B&B's etc. but they won't be cheap in July. Just be aware that it's quite a hike out there from NYC, if the wife wants to see Times Square you might want to fly into Islip on Long Island then back from LaGuardia (I think SW flies out of there). Actually NYC would probably be cheaper to stay and then day trip out to the Island for Saturday night.

Hey Roland,

I called the marina and they sent me to the local website: http://www.shelter-island.net/

She said everything's pretty close and that there are bikes/taxis also usually available.

I'm thinking you should come! :-)

Edit - I looked around the site. This place looks right over the marina as far as I can tell. Nice! http://www.shelterislandinns.com/
