Leak on forward hatch

Post by lpbp »

I have had a leak on my forward hatch since I bought my 28 last year , I replaced the the rubber seal with the correct one from Taylor this spring . Still Leaking the same spot , stb side aft on the hatch corner. { at least thats where I see water }
After I completed the install of the new seal ,I hosed it dwn to see how good of a job I did --no leaks . Now soon as we have a heavy rain ,it leaks and small puddle of water on the V berth table, I have tried looking from the top as I close it and from the inside as it closes , cant see nothing out of place , the seal is compressed all the way around . Laid a straight edge along the frame to see if it was bent , still good .
Has any one else had one of these out and is there a seal between the frame and the boat deck ?

My hatch was leaking also. Albin set my hatch in adhesive sealant. I have removed it, cleaned all sealant and reinstalled it with the gasket material from Bomar/Pompanette. No more leak. Fortunately the hatch opening core was epoxy sealed so no damage resulted.

Rebedding on the gasket as opposed to adhesive sealant made for a nice easy and clean install and if the hatch has to come out again it's just a matter of unscrewing it. Getting the hatch out without damaging anything and then cleaning all of the adhesive sealant off took over 2 hours, the re-install with the new gasket took 20 minutes.

The adhesive sealant would have held if Albin cut the hatch opening properly. The aft port corner was cut large and rough and the amount of surface area contact between the fiberglass deck and the hatch frame was minimal, thus the sealant failed prematurely.

You mention Taylor, I guess you have a Taylor Made hatch. I have a Bomar/Pompanette Extruded Low Profile Hatch. I'm sure they are similar.

If you remove your interior trim ring you should easily be able to find the leaking point. Perhaps the hole was cut large in one spot so the sealing surface is not adequate. If that's the case you can build up the opening in the spot.

The corner that was leaking was the port aft corner

I think it's time to add another section to the library. "Rob's Project Pictures".

Done!

Photo documentation is a key component of my insurance claims business so after 21 years its a way of life. I take pics during all maintenance and repairs. It's the best record keeping method there is. Plus it has proven beneficial to my fellow Albineers :wink:

I had to smile last night.
We got to the marina late and were just hanging out with some friends. A thunderstorm blew through around 9:00. Pretty strong storm. We were sitting in the cabin out of the rain. DRIP...DRIP...DRIP... From the hatch. Now I know what to do to fix it.

Thanks Rob!

Dont overlook the hatch handles. This spring I noticed a wet spot on the cushion (table was down) and saw a drip sitting on the bottom of the handle. Popped the little cap out and tightened the philips head screw which holds the handle in place (it goes through the glass) and no more leak.

Carl,
Your right. Although it was closed, it wasn't latched tight. Always check the simple stuff first.
