Diesel additive

Just a quick question, what do you guys recommend for diesel additive? I was told just Biobore, but should I be putting in something like startron also? Im glad to be rid of my ethanol issues, but diesel is new to me. Thanks for any tips.

I use Stanadyne Performance Formula. It was recommended by my mechanic. It definitely makes my 315 Yanmar run cleaner and it's not expensive if you buy in quantity on the Internet. Check their website www.stanadyne.com they also have other additives that may be of interest.

I've heard of this in passing. Many of them have a number of additives plus I'd think it would improve the "lubracity" of the fuel going through the injectors. Which one? What ratio?

I use the Star Brite enzyme treatment.

From the course I took at Mack Boring: They recommend Stanadyne Cetane or FPPF products. The Stanadyne was used by several in the course and all had good things to say about it.

Whatever I end up buying. Usually is Super Tech because it is easy to obtain.
I'll use a pint per tank at fill up which is usually around 70 gal per tank. If I don't have oil aboard when I take on fuel I don't worry about it, I just add it in the next weekend.
Yes it's a really scientific method. :roll:

I have been using PRI-D. You might want to check out their website at Power Research Inc, which includes testimonials of some impressive consumers.

The 2 cycle adds lubricity back into the fuel. Diesel fuel provides combustion and lubrication (lubrication of the fuel system). The fuel lubricates the pumps and injectors. ULSD fuel is refined to remove the sulfur for cleaner emissions but removing the sulfur diminishes the lubricity of the fuel.

I did ask a Mack Boring tech rep a couple years back what they recommended and he recommended this FPPF product.

I never used it and haven't used anything (yet). I put on enough hours to not worry about stabilizing the fuel, etc. but lubricity is a different animal...

I did use the FPPF 8+cetane improver when I first got the boat but never bothered to again..

I agree with Rob.
The first couple of seasons I used Marvel Mystery oil because the previous owner did. I met Butch, our resident diesel expert, at the 2007 rendezvous. He advised us that anything that should be in diesel fuel is already there. He did add that a biocide is helpful if you don't run the engine often. I use my boat at least 1-2 times a week so I don't worry about that.
Things have changed since 2007 so I'll invite Butch to comment on this post.

I think it is important to buy buy only from a Marina that turns their tanks which includes in the winter. And of course use the boat. Storage is most important for quality diesel. Full tanks is also smart. I don't use any additive except for winter storage and than I use a stablizer.As far as a additive for lubricity, the refiners are mandated to add a lubricity for the ULS. I think the problem area will be if and when the Bio 1-10% becomes readily available in the marine end-user business.Than I think stabiliility will be an issue. Stay tune! Enjoy the BOATING SEASON!!
