water heater

Post by jprohan »

Well, after 20 years my 6 gal. Raritan heater gave up the ghost. Actually, it still worked fine; but the casing had completely rusted away, so it was kind of floating around on it's platform;held in place by the piping and hoses. I am considering purchasing a home water heater; you can buy a 6 gal. from HD or Lowe's for 1/3 the price. The only drawback it it won't have a heat exchanger, but I don't care. Also considering an electric instant heater; but not sure if it will produce enough for a shower. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As long as you're set to use shore or generator power for hot water I suppose it COULD work. I don't remember what boat you have but the normal concern with bringing home products on board is the ability to withstand the jarring and banging, as well as the salt, of a marine environment. I'd have even greater concerns with the Instant heater, for the same reasons - power and environment.

Have you checked out any RV sites? Many RV rated products can work well on a boat.

Also think about resale value.
To me someone who uses obvious cheapo depot product is also skimpoing in other areas.
But that's just me.
Food for thought
