2011 Diesel prices Ouch

For the first time in a long time, diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline on Boston Harbor. With unrest in North Africa, expect it to continue to rise. Won't be good for the boating industry that's still trying to catch a break.

I was all set to go on a Red Sox bash...when I realized you were probably talking about the weather!

That's one of the big reasons I have decided to stick with Time after Time another year. Looked at a beautiful 44' Jersey last week, but did the math and a round trip to Block Island is 4 hours X 20Gal/hour (slow cruise) =$320 in fuel. Maybe next year.

Diesel should drop below gasoline in the warmer months when the demand for #2 home heating fuel (same as diesel)subsides.

I've waited a couple of years to relay this information as I didn't want to pass on something that could be disasterous.
The last time fuel went to almost $5.00 a gallon I got the word that used transmission fluid, when properly filtered, would burn rather well in diesel engines. I have access to a lot of that as well as some new fluid that would otherwise be recycled. I used it until the mix reached approx. 40% trans fluid and 60% diesel. At that point a loss of power was noted so I kept the ratio higher in regards to diesel.
The used fluid cost nothing. When prices came back to reality I eliminated the trans fluid and went back to pure diesel.
There were no ill effects on the engine. However I don't think I'll go above 25-30%. I fully expect fuel prices to go above the $4.00 mark again. If so I'll be pumping free trans fluid again.

I have heard similar claims regarding burning used motor oil in home furnaces. A knowledgable HVAC mechanic, and fellow gear head warned me off. I also wonder what sort of additional pollutants may be eminating from the trans fluid as it is burned as well?

I am glad I nearly topped of the tank in TOY-RIFIC when she hit the hard, that was a good investment
