I looked hard on the web for safe but comfortable PFDs. My crew and guests are family, and I am big on safety. I wanted PFDs that would be comfortable since the rule on my boat is that PFDs must be worn at all times. The Mustang and West Marine automatic inflatables were fine; and I bought one. But I liked far better the Float-Tech vest in the photo below, which is designated for my captain (my adult son). The vest is actually the inside zip-in liner for the Float-Tech foul weather jacket. AhoyCaptain on the web sells the vest separately for $179, about the same price of West Marine inflatables. The vest is very comfortable, and the full back seems safer to me since there is no way of putting it on in an unsafe manner. You can even wander into the marina bar in this and not feel uncomfortable.
Thanks to OldDemps for his excellent use of photos and for telling me how easy it is to insert them. Just use the "Upload Attachment" button at the bottom of the edit screen, browse to a jpg or gif on your hard drive, upload it, and check the "place inline" button, so that the photo appears in the message body instead of as a separate attachment. You will see the photo only after you preview.
