hot water tank died (1993 28 T E).

...engine coolant in the hot water. ...
i isolated the heater from the coolant lines for now.
i may not replace it too soon because i've already bugeted to soda blast the bottom.
new heaters aren't too expensive, but it looks like a lot of hardware has to come out to access it, including the muffler.
has anyone here ever had to change one?
any inputs appreciated.
thx.

When I bought my 28 two years ago, a new hot water heater had just been put in. I spent a lot of time in that cramped space checking everything out. I for the life of me can't figure out how they got that tank in there. There are no scratches on it and no sign of a struggle. I wish I knew who did it I would have loved to ask how they did it. Good luck with your spring project.

I share your woes over water heater replacement. Mine sprung an internal leak in the fresh water tank a few months ago.

Of course the inlet valve was seized too.

The boat is 10 years old so I guess I can't complain.

Bought a new one, stainless this time, from Defender Marine. Just one more project to add to the winter list.

I don't know about the 28 installation but the 32 looks to be fairly straight forward.

It's tight, mine is under the helm area. The best I can determine is that my Marina uses Triple M Boat workers. Thats The Munchkin Marine Mechanics Union. I've not figured out how in the world you're suppose to get into that area.

One of the advisiories I got from my mechanic this layup season was that the hot water heater bypass hoses, routed from the engine to the hot water heater were dry rotted. (I have a 1994). I have already replaced (last year) other hoses they recommended replacing.

I guess it's all part of the "maintenance thing" with an older boat that one must pay attention to. Eventually everything on a boat needs to be replaced.

I will post what my mechanic will charge me for this one. He is supposed to give me an estimate for all of the "maintenance" issues he and I have discussed at the beginning of next year. My wallet is crying right now.
(This water heater issue is one of the smaller things on the list) I was supposed to upgrade the electronics this upcoming year, but this will not be the case! Oh, well!
