How much is my deductible? UPDATE ON INVERTER/CHARGER

Post by jcollins »

We had bad storms last Thursday. I was dealing with my basement and normal water problems in our neighborhood. Didn't even think or worry about the boat.
When I got down to the shore shack Saturday, I noticed no lights on the Heart interface panel. No AC current. I "rebooted" the interface per the tech from Heart (now owned by another company) and no luck! Seems that I got a surge from the shore power and it blew out the inverter/charger. The fan runs but that's it. No LEDs, no power to the outlets or microwave. West Marine's latest flyers lists it for 1299.00. I'm sure that doesn't include the Heart interface if I need it. Insurance will pay replacement and labor less my decuctible.
Gives new meaning to the phrase Break Out Another Thousand. (b.o.a.t.)
My guess is that my old wiring on the pier isn't grounded properly.

The short story is that the inverter/charger is shot! It was a West Marine 1500. So the process began with the insurance claim, marina, etc.
Yesterday I found a Xantrex (bought out Heart) 2000, that retails for 1700.00. On boatfix.com I found one for 900. It's a factory refurb with a 90 day warranty. Since the cost of the unit and labor will be right around my deductible (1125.00) I won't have to file the claim. That's probably good news for my insurance rates.
I highly recommend boatfix.com for just about anything. They are very helpful, quick to ship, and prices are usually better than West Marine or Boat U.S.
