What the Heck is this?

Post by RicM »

Sawzall Dave is off on a delivery to FL from RI and off NY Harbor he came upon this unique vessel, and was trying to figure out it's purpose. I'm thinking it's some kind of cold storage, as the flat platform forward is covered with what looks like AC units. I'm hoping one of you sea dogs may have an answer. Oh, BTW he is delivering a 65' Trumpy. And you call me Thurston Howell!

Suspect that it is a prison barge...

Possibly the 870-bed Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center located at either Hunts Point or Rikers Island...

Have fun,

Sawzall Dave did mention that it looked like there was a lighted basketball court on the rear deck, so that must be it! I was half right it is the "cooler"!

Have fun,
Joe is correct, that is the prison barge. It's on the opposite side of the channel from Rikers Island. It's considered part of the Rikers facility. As it IS on the water I believe it has a crew per CG regs. Now there's a exciting post!!

OK, a couple of questions. PFD in every cell? How, exactly does that work? Is it considered a good assignment for the prisoners (waterfront, cool breezes, boat shoes instead of paper slippers?) or cruel & unusual punishment (seasickness, relatives need to paddle out in canoes to visit? Keel hauling instead of solitary?). Do barges even have keels?

I was in New Orleans from 1990 -1992 and watched this prison barge being constructed at Avondale Shipyards. Avondale was one of my scrap metal accounts and I am sure I received a lot of left over pieces from the construction. This is the first time I have seen a photo of the finished product.

For sure it is the Prison Barge, since it is on the Bronx side I believe it it connected with the Bronx House of Detention, Rikers Facility is across the river due south.. I frequently pass and wave to the inmates hoping the see the "Albin Way" as a better form of living.

Yes that is berthed at Hunts Point
