Mystic to Portland

Post by jleonard »

Made the "run" today. Mystic to Portland. 7 1/2 hours.
Dead flat in the sound, river of course was flat. We started at 6:15 barely light, two layers of sweatshirts. Finished in T shirts.
Awesome day except it means the end of another season.
Ran the boat right into the launch well at Yankee boatyard. Wanted to spend another night aboard, but they had no dock space. Oh well.
It's over.

No sleeping aboard while on the hard? Wow, no slips available - that's un-heard-of these days, kudos to them..

I don't want to be rude not knowing the area, but whats wrong with your anchor and anchoring out? I am buying a 40 and live in Alaska we anchor any where as needed mostly in the lee of something. depends on weather of course. I don't wish to appear stupid but did not realize boating had a season lot of us go year round up here..of course you would no best and when to give it up.

Nothing wrong with the anchor, we anchor all the time.
I have to be in work this morning at 7 wife at 9 , thus not possible to anchor out and get the boat hauled.

Also did not bring a ladder so sleeping aboard on the hard was out.

We have made that trip a few times ourselves and especially this time of year it is a beautiful trip, the Connecticut river is gorgeous. I think you lucked out with this weather, if you went today the wind would have been a challenge. Denis

I think the Haddam swsing bridge is just under 19 feet. It is not what the chart says. I could not get under at my "half mast" which is 19 ft. It may be on demand now otherwise on the 1/2 hour I believe.

RR drawbridge bridge in Old Lyme will open for you.

Watch the buoys, don't cut them until you know the river. Have a nice trip.

brought the boat back sunday. beautiful ride down river, dropped the mast so plenty of clearance on bridges. beautiful fall day. on the sound quite nice until watch hill. there was a good swell running (up to 10') and the closer we got to pt. judith, the more n.e. wind there was. rounded pt. jude towards the west passage, saw a minke whale off
the beach! great ride, thanks for the info.
