Transom Seat

I just purchased a 2000 Albin 28 TE. I need a transom seat for two guests. What works well?

I use a large ice chest with a snap on cover. With the coaming as a backrest, it works but is not as comfortable as a custom built-in. The benefit is that it is portable if you need to room for fishing.

I do just the same. I have the Igloo Marine 128 with the snap-on cushion as well as the cooler mat to keep it from sliding and/or scratching the floor. A little sand under the cooler on a long trip can do some damage.

The big cooler is great on our 7 to 10 day trips. The divider is used to separate the beverages from the food. Then on the last night we can usually condense everything into the fridge and give the cooler a good cleaning. Then we use the laundry facilities wherever we are and the big cooler holds all the cleaned and folded clothes just perfectly. And they stay warm too

Thanks for advice. The Igloo 128 with 38-1/2" cushion is perfect width for two.

I am trying a "Toonmate" transom seat that is 36" wide. (This is wide enough for two adults who are friends.) Top of backrest is just an inch above transom. It has a comfortable cushioned seat and cushioned backrest. The cushion hinges forward for storage under in the white, reinforced plastic box that serves as a base. Storage area is fine for medium duffel plus softsided REI weekend cooler. Rigid coolers except the tiniest do not fit. Unit is light enough to move easily. Appearance (white marine vinyl) is OK. Design of seat to backrest joint is very poor, but this is not visible. Cost is $200. Assembly takes twenty minutes.

Unless you boat on very protected waters you might not want to invest too much in a transom seat. If you go out in wind and waves the transom area can be pretty wet. If you purchase individual chairs you can move them up near the cabin to stay dry or sit near the transom when the water is flat. You can also sit in them to fish facing any direction you want.

We use one of these which is easy to leave at the dock on fishing trips.In fact it spends more time in the garage than on the boat. But when we go away for the weekend or have guests it works very well.

Thanks, Carl. That is exactly what I need. The seat I am using now is cumbersome to move on and off the boat.
