transmission oil change.
Moderator: Jeremyvmd
transmission oil change.
i know its not good to leave old engine oil in the engine over the winter (changed mine today), but what about transmission fluid? i'm thinking it might be better to change that in the spring.

Tomcat, I'm no expert but this is what I've learned so far from many people far smarter than I about this.
You change the oil annualy or every 100 hours because the oil breaksdown and looses a big part of it's protective agents ( rust corrosion protection). The oil also gets sooty and dirty as well as looses some viscosity. Putting fresh oil in during the time that the engine sits(over the winter) helps to keep the corrosion/rusting issues from happening. I'm guessing that the same thing happens to some degree in the transmissions. Since I really abuse my VelvetDrive, I feel better about changing that out too. Same process...suck it out, put in new. Again...I've said it before. There is little that you can do to prolong your engine; keep in flushed, running properly, change the oil....since the replacement for me would be in the $26,000.00 range....I'll do what I feel I can to prolong the engine......so since I like synthetics and feel that they offer better viscosity and protection factors, I keep mine change out pretty regularly....engine and tranny.

yep, and it sure makes it easier with the...
...oil change pump. i probably did the job today in less than an hour. didn't spill a drop (first time , ever!). i wired the pump so it will both fill and drain, but filling conventionally is just not that hard...
the peninsular takes 10 quarts. i guess that's about average.
