No spill oil filter change
On the 315 Yanmar, is there a way to change the oil filter without making a complete mess?
I would love to hear a proven method that prevents the spillage.
Facing that dilemma in a few weeks......
With such a wonderful engine.....why can't they design filter positions that are EASY to change? (Some design engineer in Japan is laughing right now!!!)

while taking the mack-boring course i posed the same question. they said simply puncture the filter prior to removal. the oil in the filter will drain into crankcase.

Don't warm the engine up. The oil drains from the filter overnight.

I always warm the engine prior to sucking out the oil and have never punched a hole in the filter. I put a supermarket-checkout plastic bag and oil sorb rag on top of the oil cooler lines under the filter. I also stuff another oil sorb in all the voids that the oil would want to rundown when it comes out. I manage to catch all of the oil with nothing dripping into the bilge. Takes a minute to prep before spinning off the filter but never a mess. IMO, I think I would be more prone to try the hole in the filter rather than changing the oil without warming the engine first.

As a "wanna-be" owner who has never actually set foot on one of these boats, I may sound stupid suggesting this.
What about an oil filter relocation kit? They usually have a plate that mount where the oil filter used to go, a supply and return hose and a mounting plate for the new filter location. Place it some place easy to access and vertical with room for a bucket under. As an added bonus, your oil capacity increases depending on the length of the hose. I believe you can also specify the size/type of filter for the new location so you could put a larger capacity, more commonly available filter on if that helps.
I know these are used on large trucks and industrial/ construction equipment all the time.

When I changed my engine oil/filters a couple of weeks ago I used the same technique RobS mentions above. One difference is I used a kitchen garbage bag in lieu of a plastic grocery bag. The bigger bag allows me to drop the filter deeper into the bag as soon as it's detached from the engine to avoid further spilage. No mess, no hassle.

This might help prevent spills, I just saw it in a car mag last night and though of this post. Form a Funnel . com Seems to me you could use heavy foil as well.

I do the same as Rob S except dont use oil pads and once filter is off and in the bag I move it to a large empty coffee can.
