Cummins 6bta 225 hp

Post by easyg »

I am buying an Albin 40 trunk cabin, with a Cummins 6bta, 225hp with about 900 hrs. I would like to know if anyone in the group can give me some insight as to the burn rate, maintainence issues, and how it compares with the leeman 125/135 that seem to be more common. I am concerned that this engine is not very fuel efficient and can be expensive and a hassel to maintain. thanks, greg

All you want to know about that engine can be found at http://boatdiesel.com//index.cfm?

Also, AOG member jleonard should be able to offer you some very valuable feedback.

I special ordered my 1986 A27 to have the Westerbeke 100hp. This was when Albin was using the Nissan 70hp for the 27. To give a cruising speed at or near hull speed the 70hp would have to work hard. To give the same speed the Westerbeke was loafing along at 1800-1900rpm.

Similar with the Cummins 225 vs a Leyman 135. The Cummins should push the boat comfortably, & quietly, at hull speed. Additional fuel burn over a hard working smaller engine will be insignificant IMO. Now, if you want to squeeze that extra knot or two out of the boat, you can, but it is not worth extra fuel burn nor wear & tear (& expenses that go with it) on a hard working engine.
