Racor filter gauge

Post by Russell »

Does anyone have one of these pressure gauges installed on their Racor filter? It seems like a good idea to monitor the condition of the filter, but how do you open and close the canister with the T-handle gone?

Russell:

Take note of the Racor notice for their 500 series filter housings. I have been plagued with filter problems since I started using the 2010s over 15 months ago. Unfortunately, I had purchased a case of them and did not find out about the problem until I opened a new case last week. Racor had inserted a notice in their 2010 packaging that a spacer may be required for the 500 style housings manufactured before 1998.

A call to Racor's tech support resulted in their sending to me the required spacers - FREE. A web site for marine supplies wanted $6.25 each...

I have the old stye 500 series housing - hope that you do not. If you do, Racor tech support can be reached at 800-344-3286. 2010s manufactured after 9/01/06 are suppose to come with the spacer in the packaging along with the standard O-rings...

Your source for the fuel filter gague has the following notice on their web site. The recess that they refer to is a flat bar which crosses the diameter of the housing, inside the housing. The newer units have a rounded bar from what I can see...

-------------------------------------------------

Racor 500 Series Built 1997 and before may need
a Spacer if using the new Racor element 2010 S T
or P This Filter can be easy identified by the
recess at the bottom of the filter.

If not used the filter may go far down into the
housing past the hole in the suction pipe and the
filter will be bypassed. Racor Part # 15424

------------------------------------------------

I toyed with the idea of a gague but as of this writing I can tell somewhat what the status of the filter is by watching my idle speed while moving in the canal. GPS come in handy...

As to your question as to how to get to the filter once the gague is installed - I suspect that the gague assembly gets removed. Also, make sure that you have the necessary height clearence for installation....

Have fun,
Joe

Filter guages

Post by AlMar »

That's funny. Until Russel brought it up, I didn't know the filters came WITHOUT gauges  Not only do I have one on each of my filters, I also have one on the dash. 8)

Racor fuel filter gauge

Post by Sea Gate »

Look in the 2006 BoatUS catalog, page 275 and you will see the T-handle Gauge Kit, , #466151. I've just purchased a 2000 A28 and the guys at Annapolis Harbor Boatyard are installing this unit for me, plus about 14 other things.
Expect to bring the boat to the Beaufort, NC area before Thanksgiving - 360+ miles; wish it was summertime.

By the way, it should be a vacuum gauge, not a pressure gauge.

Gauge

Post by StockHR »

I have a gauge on my raycor and it really helps prevent problems. I'm interested in the one on the dash that AlMar mentions. I'd love to have one up on the bridge but I think the safest way is using some sort of electronic sending unit off the top of the raycor. AlMar can you tell us more about yours is to tubing or electronic?

Thanks, Mike

vacume

Post by AlMar »

It's a tubing gauge that taps off the line just before it gets to the fuel pump. I also have two racors that can be switched from either fuel tank, Sooooo, when I see the vacume get too high on the dash, I can swap fuel filters while on the fly.
