Re: Albin 28TEFD Vetus Bow Truster
I had a similar problem a year ago. Turns out it was nothing more than corrosion on the wiring connections at the thruster motor.
Try cleaning them first before looking further.

Hi Albineers,
Regards to my Vetus Bow Thruster trouble .... props can't turn manually.
Have any Albineers here switch to other Brands while replacing their defective bow thruster for economic reasons.
If Not, is the reason due to technical specs ?
What will be the difficulty encounter ?
Wish to learn from your valuable experiences.
Thanks,
Lawrento

Re: Albin 28TEFD Vetus Bow Truster
Hi Lawrento,
The prop should turn manually. If it can't you likely have either a frozen motor or a problem in the gearcase. You should be able to remove the motor from the gearcase and isolate where the problem lies. Replacing the motor should be fairly straight forward - although if getting a replacement in Singapore is too difficult you could look into having it rebuilt locally. If the gearcase is locked up you have different problems.
I've not seen any conversations on the forum about changing brands of thrusters. Since the thruster tunnel is normally matched to the specific thruster being installed it would make sense to stick with the same brand. That way clearences and mounting should be consistent.
Let us know how this moves along for you!

Hi--the brushes need to be cleaned-- you will need a vice grip needle nose pliers -- just pull the brushes out-- clean them up-- or replace them- and the unit will work fine.
If you look in the manual for the thruster it suggests the brushes be cleaned every season.

Re: Albin 28TEFD Vetus Bow Thruster
I had the same problem with my Vetus bow thruster. Ian from Vetus in Florida was an excellent help. He walked me through the thruster and found the wire for one of the brushes was corroded. I replaced all the brushes cleaned it up and works fine.
Thanks

Welcome aboard, Henry. Nice boat you have there!
Forum hint: unless a thread is fairly current, you're usually better off to start a new thread.
I suggest that you call Vetus for guidance on part numbers and sourcing.

Someone more mechanical than I may jump in re: the brushes. When we replaced ours in 2013, they cost nowhere near that! I recall the whole overhaul was $200-300.

Re: Albin 28TEFD Vetus Bow Thruster
Don't pay that for brushes, get generic ones for $30-40..
Vetus wants nothing to do with old units so they up the price on old ones to persuade folks to upgrade to the latest model.
