28 TE Windshield trim

Post by dvlyon »

I just purchased a 1993 28 TE and I would like to remove the windshield frames for powder coating this winter. This doesn't look too easy because the inside frame screws are not easily reached. I searched the forum for info with no luck. Has anybody done this? What are the chances of me being able to get new frames if the removal gets ugly?

Thanks in advance.

I have more than once sat in my pilothouse and wondered the same thing, came up with no easy solution and just hope that I never "need" to take the window frames out....

That makes at least 3 of us! The port side window got my gears turning as a small piece of gasket has slipped out from an inside corner. Thankfully it hasn't changes in years, though I still look and wonder ... "how in the heck can I remove that window for repair" ?

Gery and I were discussing the same thing while up at the rendezvous. They must have mounted the window frames before setting the pilothouse structure on the hull.

Take out the windows and use a short screwdriver bit in one of those ratcheting box wrenches? And hope the screw is short?

I remember bringing it up to you and then you said "Oh no, now you're gonna have me staring at that all night..."

The front pane slides back so you're idea is right on as long as the screws ain't too long. I will have to give it a look see...

How about you all come down this winter, we throw back some "Heinys" and have at it. I have a right angle ratchet screw driver that might do the trick. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for confirming that it ain't going to be easy.

At the Newport Show I was chatting a while with Kenny from Standish and I brought this up to him. He said, "Well you can unscrew and lift the pilothouse off the boat" :D
Or, if it's just about cosmetic repair to the window frame finish, spend a lot of time carefully masking off all surrounding areas and get a spray guy to prep & respray the frames in place.

That would be my recommendation...tape it off, sand it and put a good quality marine paint on it. Look up " tipping" as it refers to painting. We did an entire 41' boat that was aluminum and we " tipped" it after brushing it....you would have sworn it was spray painted.

I am going through this right now. The window frames on the port and starboard sides were in pretty tough shape. Paint was pealing in a number of places. The front windshield was not nearly as bad. Only a few spots where paint was pealing. I talked to a number of people and a few guys in the local boat yard. All basically indicated that it would be very expensive to remove the window frames, acid clean them and repaint or powder coat. The boat yard thought the cost be as high as $10,000. Everybody suggested just treating it as a maintenance item. Sand the bad areas touch them up. So as we speak, this is what I am doing. I sanded and preped the entire port and starboard side frames. The areas where paint pealed and aluminum was exposed, I sanded completely and primed with a two part primer. The front window I only sanded the bad areas, taped and primed. This week I am painting the finish paint. I originally planned on using a two part finish paint, but after looking into it, I just could not find the correct color and no easy way for me to match the existing paint. Interlux Brightside has a standard color which matched the existing paint exactly. So Brightside it is. As far as I can tell, it looks pretty good. The areas on the front wiindow frame match the existing very nicely. Only can see a differene if you look real closely.

JeffM,
I looked up your prior posts, your TE is a 1999, mine is a 2000, so "good" chance we have the same color frames...
Interlux Brightside comes in many whites, which are you using?
Are you spraying, rolling, brushing?
Any photos for posting?
Thanks!
