with my first marine diesel i find this stuff scary. i thought diesels were supposed to be low maintanance and high longevity.

It is well known that the valves are the weak link in the Yanmars. That is why the exhaust valve seal upgrade and the followup valve adjustment were left to my trusted Yanmar certified mechanic. All else is taken care of by yours truly.. Proper engine loading, valves adjusted to spec, scheduled oil and coolant changes, cooling loop flushes, etc. and run her properly, that's all we can do...

I have not read anywhere that Albins have this problem. Water backing up into the turbo is an exhaust system design problem in most cases. (This was a problem with Mainship 390s that had the CAT 3126 engine).now i have to worry about raw water in my turbo????? what was to maintain here
Other times it "can" happen when the boat is lifted for winter storage, or put on a trailer to ship. The boat MUST be tilted slightly aft downhill so any water remaining in the exhaust system can drain out. If tipped forward standing water can enter the turbocharger.
YOU can affect this by making sure the marina that hauls you watches out for this.
