28TE w/yanmar 6LP-STE
Hi All,
Newbie to this site. I am looking into a purchase of a 2001 28TE with the Yanmar 6LP-STE 300hp engine.
But in doing some homework I'm finding there are valve issues with these engines. Can anyone with some knowledge
in this area help me make a smart decision.
Thanks

Re: 28TE w/yanmar 6LP-STE
Engine serial number M51201 and later was effected by the exhaust valve problem. Do a search here on AOG for some info. Join boatdiesel.com and do a search and get more information than you will have time to read. Perhaps the seller had the exhaust valve stem seals updated?
Original problem type : P# 119770-91030 (color of rubber portion : gray)
New type : P# 119775-11340 (color of rubber portion : green)
You can pull the valve cover (the gasket is rubber and re-usable) and check the color of the rubber on the seal and hope for green...

No problem. Here's a shot of my new "green" valve seals.

Off the cuff I'm gonna say that the problem was resolved when they renamed it the 315 but can't say for sure without a little research...

Re: 28TE w/yanmar 6LP-STE
The information I saw on this is: Engines from Feb 1, 2002 with serial M51201 and later are the newer configuration with the green stripe seals. They may be the 6LP(A) designation. For the 2001 engine the most important thing would be to find out if the previous owner made the change to the newer seals.

Thanks guys I have a call in to the broker to find out the serial number of the engine. He was told by the owner that there was not a recall on his engine but I would still want to check that out. Thanks for the help!

Re: 28TE w/yanmar 6LP-STE
I think some early 315 have the same issue...anyhow, they are exactly the same engine. The only difference is the way they were rated when manufactured. I have had the valve seal kit installed in mine. At the time Yanmar paid for all but $35.00 of it.

Re: 28TE w/yanmar 6LP-STE
I to am looking at a 2000 28te Albin with a yanmar 300 6lp ste. I question the broker about the exhaust valve issues and he is telling me that he checked with Mack boring in union and the boat owner (original owner) and both are informing him that there were never any issues recommended updates on this engine.
The serial number is P52299. I am correct in believing this is one of the engines that should have been updated with the green seals based on the year and serial number. Am I missing something? thanks in advance for any help. I'm new to the site and am in the market for a 28 with diesel power. Family has had it with the 1984 mako 258 with 250 yammy. wife and kids Think they need some accommodations for overnighters!

Thanks very much. I find it hard to believe that the broker wont acknowledge this!
